Mental Health Awareness: Breaking the Stigma and Promoting Wellness

Mental health is a vital aspect of our overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked and stigmatized. Mental health awareness is crucial in promoting understanding, reducing stigma, and encouraging individuals to seek help when needed. In this article, we will explore the importance of mental health awareness, the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, and ways to promote mental wellness.

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness

Mental health awareness is essential in promoting a culture of understanding and acceptance. When we talk openly about mental health, we can:

    • Reduce stigma: By discussing mental health openly, we can reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, encouraging individuals to seek help without fear of judgment.
    • Promote understanding: Mental health awareness helps individuals understand the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, enabling them to recognize the warning signs in themselves or others.
    • Encourage help-seeking: When we normalize mental health discussions, individuals are more likely to seek help when needed, reducing the risk of mental health conditions escalating into more severe conditions.

Signs and Symptoms of Mental Health Conditions

Mental health conditions can manifest in various ways, and it is essential to recognize the signs and symptoms. Some common signs and symptoms of mental health conditions include:

    • Anxiety: Excessive worry, fear, or apprehension, which can interfere with daily life.
    • Depression: Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness, which can affect mood, appetite, and sleep.
    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Flashbacks, nightmares, or avoidance of triggers related to a traumatic event.
    • Bipolar Disorder: Mood swings, from extreme highs to extreme lows, which can affect daily life.
    • Schizophrenia: Hallucinations, delusions, or disorganized thinking, which can affect perception and behavior.

    Ways to Promote Mental Wellness

Promoting mental wellness is crucial in maintaining good mental health. Here are some ways to promote mental wellness:

    • Exercise regularly: Physical activity can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
    • Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing, can reduce stress and improve mood.
    • Get enough sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for mental health, as it helps regulate mood and reduce stress.
    • Connect with others: Social connections are vital for mental health, as they provide support, validation, and a sense of belonging.
    • Seek professional help: If you are struggling with mental health issues, seek professional help from a mental health professional.

    Breaking the Stigma

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is crucial in promoting awareness and encouraging individuals to seek help. Here are some ways to break the stigma:

    • Talk openly: Share your mental health experiences with others, promoting open and honest discussions.
    • Use mental health language: Use mental health terminology, such as "mental health" and "mental illness," to promote understanding and reduce stigma.
    • Avoid stereotypes: Avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes and stigmatizing language, which can exacerbate mental health issues.
    • Support mental health initiatives: Support organizations and initiatives that promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma.

    Conclusion

Mental health awareness is essential in promoting understanding, reducing stigma, and encouraging individuals to seek help when needed. By recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, promoting mental wellness, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, we can create a culture of acceptance and support. Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

  • Encourage Deep Breathing With A Guided Meditation

Encourage Deep Breathing With A Guided Meditation

Explore this introduction to belly breathing to help you relax and reduce stress.

    What is Belly Breathing?

Encourage deep breathing with belly breathing, you simply take long, conscious breaths. Ideally you breathe in for a count of three and breathe out for a count of five. Repeating this cycle will trigger the relaxation response—it’s the opposite of the fight-or-flight stress response in that you engage the nervous system to tell your body to relax and your mind to be at ease.

    Two Basic Belly Breathing Tips

    1. Breathe deeply. When you breathe deeply, your diaphragm at the base of your lungs pushes your belly out. This is belly breathing and is a natural way to breathe—you can see babies doing it.

    2. As you exhale, gently press on your belly. As you breathe in, encourage your belly to expand, and as you breathe out, allow your belly to contract. You could even gently push your belly in with your hand when you breathe out to help you to do this, if it doesn’t come naturally to you.

Check Your Stress Levels with This Belly Breathing Practice

If the hand on your chest is moving but not your belly, you’re breathing in a shallow way.

    1. Begin by finding a quiet place to sit or lie down. If practicing for the first time, lying down may make it easier for you to understand what barely breathing actually feels like. Remember that belly breathing is a natural way of breathing. If you look at a baby or young child, you’ll see that their belly seems to naturally expand and contract slowly and smoothly as they breathe in and out.
    2. Once you’re settled and comfortable, place one palm gently around the area of your navel and the other palm on your chest. Continue to breathe normally, and just watch the movements of your hands. Does the hand on your belly move as you breathe in and out? And what about the hand on your chest? Which one moves the most, the hand on your belly or the hand on your chest?
    3. If the hand on your chest is moving but not your belly, you’re breathing in a shallow way. By learning belly breathing, you’re likely to feel more relaxed and have more energy, and your body will be fed with more fresh oxygen
    4. Keeping your hands on your belly and chest, begin by imagining there’s a balloon in your belly. When you breathe in, you’re inflating that balloon and when you breathe out, that balloon deflates. Now breathe in so that you fill the imaginary balloon in your belly as much as possible.
    5. Hold your breath for about two seconds. And then breathe out slowly and smoothly as you can, using your mouth as if you’re blowing through a straw. Now let your breath be normal and natural again.
    6. Notice how you feel. That was one belly breath. It was more exaggerated than an actual belly breath, but this technique helps to engage your relaxation response, making you counteract your feelings of stress. Just one breath in this way can help me to find some relaxation when you’re feeling tense, and you can do it at any time, wherever you are.
    7. Now you can experiment with counting as you do belly breath. If you want, on your next breath, breathe deeply and smoothly, expanding your belly as you slowly count to four. One, two, three, four. Hold for a count to one, two.
    8. And now slowly exhale to count six. One, two, three, four, five, six. And now breathe as you normally do. Notice how you feel this time, by extending the amount of time you breathe out compared to breathing in.
    9. Encourage your body to relax and your mind to calm. Your breath has a direct link to the systems in your body that make you feel relaxed. By doing belly breaths you send signals to your body that it is safe for you to feel relaxed and at ease. Your blood pressure goes down, your muscles relax and you can think in a more creative and holistic way. You can enhance the experience by bringing the attitudes of kindfulness into the experience, by really feeling the sensations of your breathing.
    10. Let the warmth of your hand against your belly represent a friendly, caring support. Allow yourself permission to be kind to yourself and not force anything too much.
    11. Now when you’re ready, try counting four belly breaths in a row. One, two, three, four hold one, two.
    12. And breathe out. Two, three, four, five, six, rest one, two. Belly breath in. One, two, three, four, hold one, two and breathe out again. Two, three, four, five, six.
    13. Do the last two belly breaths on your own, using a pace that feels right for you. Notice how you feel now, consider how relaxed you feel. Are you more or less relaxed than when you started? If you’re less relaxed, don’t worry about it too much. You’re just starting to learn this new technique.

Use a few belly breaths any time you feel excessively stressed, to make you feel more calm and relaxed. You can even practice some belly breaths before you begin the meditation, to give you a nice relaxing start.

    4 discoveries beyond the brain

Neurodegenerative diseases—such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease (PD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease)—affect millions of people around the world. These conditions progressively damage nerve cells in the brain and nervous system. Over time, this can lead to problems with movement, thinking, memory, and more.

A century ago, many neurological conditions could only be diagnosed through an autopsy (after the person had died). Fortunately, today’s doctors and scientists have more ways to examine the brains and nervous systems of living patients. But these disorders can still be challenging to detect. Current diagnostic tools often identify these diseases after they have already started to damage the brain.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) leads research to help better understand, diagnose, and treat these conditions. Here are four recent discoveries that may help doctors and scientists spot early signs of damage, develop and test new treatments, and figure out who might benefit most from specific therapies.

    Heart imaging reveals early signs

NINDS researchers at the NIH Clinical Center used a new method to identify early signs of PD and LBD. This team used a special type of PET scan to look at the hearts of people at high risk for these diseases. They found that people who later developed PD or LBD had levels of a chemical called norepinephrine in their hearts that were much lower than is typical, years before they showed any symptoms.

These findings suggest that PD or LBD might start in the part of the nervous system that controls automatic body functions (like heart rate and blood pressure) even before they affect the brain. Being able to spot these early signs could change how doctors understand and treat these diseases.

    Blood tests for mitochondrial damage

NIH-funded researchers are developing a blood test that measures the level of damage to the DNA inside mitochondria—the cell’s energy producers. Previous research suggests that mitochondrial damage may be linked to some cases of PD, so focusing on this damage may help identify and diagnose PD early on. In this study, blood samples from people with PD showed more cell damage compared to samples from healthy volunteers. Some people with PD also had more damage than others.

Researchers still need to show that the test works in larger and more diverse populations. If successful, the test could help identify treatments that target mitochondria, learn which patients are most likely to respond to certain treatments, and determine whether a treatment is working.

Artificial intelligence analyzes sleep breathing patterns

In another innovative study, NINDS-funded researchers used an artificial intelligence (AI) program to identify PD by analyzing breathing patterns during sleep. The researchers tested the AI program using two types of sleep data: breathing patterns and brain activity.

By looking at 12 nights of sleep test data from people with and without PD, the program was able to identify those with PD with a high degree of accuracy. It also detected small changes in PD symptoms over a longer period of time more accurately than traditional clinical assessments.

This program could help both doctors and researchers. By using this tool, doctors may find PD earlier, and researchers may develop new treatments easier and faster. However researchers need to test it with more people from diverse backgrounds first. They also think it could be especially helpful for people who live in remote areas or have trouble leaving home.

Top: A participant wearing a chest belt during a sleep study to measure breathing patterns. Bottom: A wireless sensor uses radio signals to monitor breathing patterns without physical contact during sleep.

Two photos of sleeping research participants. One is wearing a chest belt. The other has a wireless monitor near their bed.

Image 1: A participant wearing a chest belt during a sleep study to measure breathing patterns. Image 2: A wireless sensor uses radio signals to monitor breathing patterns without physical contact during sleep.

    Skin biopsy for neurodegenerative diseases

NIH-funded researchers developed a simple skin biopsy that may identify people with PD, LBD, and related disorders. This quick, nearly painless test looks for phosphorylated alpha-synuclein, a specific protein that’s associated with certain neurodegenerative diseases.

In this study, researchers looked at small skin samples from people diagnosed with one of these conditions and people without any history of neurodegenerative diseases. The test found this protein in more than 90% of people with a diagnosis compared to only 3% of individuals without one. This could lead to faster, more accurate diagnoses and earlier treatments for patients.

11 Reasons to Work with a Health Coach

Reviewed by Brian St. Pierre, MS, RD

You can learn everything on your own… right?

In other words, between books and free online articles and videos, what’s the point of working with a health coach?

    Well, there’s a few points…

A health coach offers unique knowledge and insights that can help you in ways you can’t necessarily get on your own. They fill in the nutritional and exercise gaps you may overlook, make sure you’re adhering to your intentions, and suggest solutions (and moral support) when you hit inevitable obstacles.

In fact, hiring a health coach may be one of the best decisions you can make for your long term wellbeing.

Keep reading to find out 11 (good) reasons to work with a health coach.

First, what is a health coach?

A health coach is a dedicated wellness expert who can help you achieve your goals.

Health coaches possess expertise based on a solid foundation in exercise science, anatomy, and physiology to craft safe and effective programs. They take into account individual requirements, capabilities, and objectives to tailor wellness plans to suit your unique needs.

Health coaches may also have nutrition expertise. They’ll delve into the dietary considerations and lifestyle factors (like stress management, sleep, and recovery) that impact your overall health.

As you attempt to make and sustain changes, your health coach can also be a valuable source of encouragement and accountability. They provide guidance, monitor progress, make adjustments as needed—so you can get the results you’ve been looking for.

11 reasons to work with a health coach

Working with a health coach can help you in numerous ways, whether you’re just starting, or need some tips or tweaks along the way.

Reason #1: You’re not seeing results.

If you’ve been putting in consistent effort without seeing results, consider the expertise of a health coach.

They bring a fresh set of eyes to your habits and routines. They’ll assess what you’re currently doing and suggest tweaks or changes to make your plan more efficient and effective.

Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of fine-tuning your approach. They’ll also help you set realistic, achievable goals, ensuring you’re on the right track.

Reason #2: You don’t know where to start.

With so much information out there, how do you know where to start? A health coach can help you make sense of all the (sometimes contradictory) advice and provide you with a clear, actionable plan.

They streamline the process, break it down into manageable steps, and offer an appropriate starting point tailored to you.

They’ll introduce you to fundamental exercises, including cardio, weight training, and flexibility training. If appropriate, they might introduce you to nutrition fundamentals, including finding the right balance of macronutrients.

A health coach takes the time to understand your specific needs, capabilities, and objectives. They’ll also ensure you’re not just going through the motions but truly understand why you’re doing what you’re doing. This helps you build a solid foundation to make gradual but definite progress.

Reason #3: You have a specific goal in mind.

If you’re focused on an objective, such as weight loss, muscle building, healthier eating, or stress management, a health coach can make a difference, helping you connect the dots between what you eat, how you move, your sleep quality, and more.

Even if you have a particular area of your life you’re striving to improve, a health coach can help you see the “big picture” view, and how often one aspect of your life is connected to and affects other aspects of your life.

That way, you can understand where to focus your energy—sleep, exercise, nutrition, relationships—to help you achieve your goal.

Reason #4: You need more structure in your wellness routine.

A health coach will create a plan that optimizes both effectiveness and efficiency.

During workouts, health coaches offer direction to ensure you exercise with precision. They provide feedback, corrections, and technique guidance to make your routine more impactful.

This also applies to nutrition. A health coach can help you learn how to incorporate foods with greater nutrient value in ways that work for you, so you’re more likely to develop healthier habits in the long-term.

Reason #5: You need someone to hold you accountable.

By scheduling regular sessions and check-ins, health coaches create a structured framework for your progress.

This significantly increases the likelihood of you adhering to your workout and nutrition intentions. Without the accountability of a scheduled session, it’s easier to skip exercise or make less nutritious food choices.

Of course, there’s always a financial and temporal investment associated with health coaching. Committing to regular sessions not only safeguards your financial investment but also reaffirms the importance of allocating time for your well-being.

Reason #6: You’re having trouble staying motivated.

In addition to accountability, your health coach serves as a source of encouragement and motivation.

They celebrate your triumphs, provide reassurance during challenging moments, and offer constructive feedback. They understand the ebb and flow of progress and help you generate the motivation needed to sustain behavior changes.

A health coach will take the time to understand your aspirations, struggles, and targets so you feel heard and valued. Having a coach to cheer you on and push you past your limits can make all the difference.

Reason #7: You need an expert resource.

Working with a health coach goes beyond achieving exercise and nutrition goals—it can be a valuable learning experience.

Certified health coaches possess a deep understanding of human physiology, body mechanics, behavior change, and nutrition science, making them a valuable resource for clients seeking comprehensive knowledge on holistic wellness.

Reason #8: You need someone to make decisions for you.

Working with a health coach offers a reprieve from the constant decision-making that comes with managing your fitness and nutrition.

The multitude of choices, from exercise routines to dietary plans, can often lead to “decision fatigue,” which can then lead to frustration. You may find it a relief to have a trusted expert guide you and help narrow your options.

Reason #9: You want to enjoy taking care of yourself.

Exercise doesn’t have to feel like a chore.

A health coach can help you find ways to move your body that are enjoyable so that you look forward to taking care of yourself.

Not all exercise suits all people, but a health coach can help you find something that works—even if you’ve never exercised before.

Reason #10: You want to learn how to take care of yourself.

If your goal is to eventually create and follow your own instincts, working with a health coach can help get you there.

As we’ve said, health coaches understand exercise, nutrition and how those two things work together to create a healthier lifestyle. By dedicating yourself to learning the wellness skills and knowledge that work for you, you’ll one day be able to sustainably take care of yourself.

    Reason #11: You’re looking for long-term benefits.

Anyone can start exercising or following a fad diet.

However, a health coach will help you learn how to incorporate nutrition and movement into your life in a way that’s sustainable.

This means taking into account factors such as your age, current fitness level, goals, lifestyle, and anything else that affects your health. Long-term benefits include learning how to tend to all six aspects of Deep Health (not just what you eat and how much you exercise). Those six aspects are:

    • Relational health
    • Existential health
    • Mental health
    • Physical health
    • Emotional health
    • Environmental health

When you take into account your psychological well-being, your ability to focus and think clearly, how well your home and work environment supports your health, your relationships with others, and your overall sense of purpose, you’ll be more likely to create a meaningful plan—and stick with it.

We’re here to help you reach your goals

You don’t have to tackle your health journey alone.

The coaches at Precision Nutrition are experts in exercise and nutrition—as well as behavior change—and can help you reach your goals effectively and safely.

With our 1:1 Coaching Program, you’ll work with a coach who’ll tailor a nutrition and wellness plan based on your lifestyle, goals, and preferences using scientifically proven methods. With help, you’ll learn how to incorporate healthy habits into your daily lifestyle for long-term success.

  • Sweat Under the Sun: The Ultimate Guide to Outdoor Workouts and Their Numerous Benefits

Sweat Under the Sun: The Ultimate Guide to Outdoor Workouts and Their Numerous Benefits

As the sun rises over the horizon, many people hit the great outdoors to tackle their daily workouts. Outdoor workouts are an excellent way to get some fresh air, exercise, and a much-needed dose of vitamin D. They also offer a unique set of benefits that are hard to replicate in a traditional gym setting.

    The Benefits of Outdoor Workouts

Outdoor workouts, also known as "sweat under the sun," have been gaining popularity over the years, and for good reason. One of the most significant advantages is the mental boost that comes with exercising outdoors. Being in nature has been shown to reduce stress levels, improve mood, and increase feelings of well-being. This is often referred to as the "exercise-induced relaxation response."

Another major benefit of outdoor workouts is the variety of options they offer. Whether you’re a fan of running, hiking, cycling, or weightlifting, there’s an outdoor workout for you. You can choose from trails, parks, beaches, or even urban streets, giving you the freedom to switch up your routine and keep things interesting.

In addition to the mental and physical benefits, outdoor workouts also provide a sense of connection to nature. Being outdoors exposes you to natural elements like sunlight, wind, and water, which can have a profound impact on your overall health and well-being.

    Getting Started with Outdoor Workouts

So, how do you get started with outdoor workouts? The first step is to identify your goals and preferences. Are you looking for a cardio-intensive workout or something more focused on strength training? Do you prefer gentle hills or rugged trails? Once you have a clear idea of what you’re looking for, you can start exploring outdoor locations that fit your needs.

Next, be sure to dress appropriately for the season and weather conditions. This may mean bringing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for outdoor workouts during the day. In the winter, you may need a warm coat, gloves, and a scarf. It’s also a good idea to invest in a good pair of shoes that are designed for outdoor activities.

    Bodyweight Exercises for Outdoor Workouts

One of the most convenient aspects of outdoor workouts is the ability to do bodyweight exercises. These exercises require no equipment other than your own body, making them ideal for outdoor workouts. Some examples of bodyweight exercises include push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks.

These exercises can be modified to suit your fitness level and goals. For example, you can do push-ups on a bench or ledge, or modify squats by reducing the depth or using a balance board. Lunges can be done in place or with a step or box. Planks can be held for different lengths of time or combined with other exercises like leg lifts or arm raises.

    Outdoor Yoga and Pilates

In addition to bodyweight exercises, outdoor yoga and Pilates classes are also becoming increasingly popular. These classes provide a unique and challenging way to improve your flexibility, balance, and strength. Many gyms and studios offer outdoor yoga and Pilates classes, or you can find individual instructors who offer private sessions.

One of the benefits of outdoor yoga and Pilates is the ability to connect with nature. Doing these exercises outdoors can be very grounding and meditative, allowing you to focus on your breath and the present moment.

    Outdoor Cardio Workouts

For those who prefer cardio-intensive workouts, outdoor options abound. Some popular options include running, cycling, swimming, and hiking. These workouts provide a great way to improve your cardiovascular health, burn calories, and boost your mood.

When it comes to outdoor cardio workouts, it’s important to choose a location that is safe and well-lit. You may want to avoid running or cycling in the early morning or evening when the lighting is poor. It’s also a good idea to bring a water bottle and snacks, especially if you’re planning a long workout.

    Outdoor Strength Training Workouts

For those who prefer strength training, outdoor options are also plentiful. Some popular options include weightlifting, resistance band exercises, and burpees. These workouts provide a great way to improve your strength, power, and endurance.

When it comes to outdoor strength training workouts, it’s important to choose a location that is safe and has minimal distractions. You may want to avoid areas with loose gravel or uneven terrain, as this can increase your risk of injury. It’s also a good idea to bring a mat or towel to provide extra grip and protection for your joints.

    Safety Tips for Outdoor Workouts

While outdoor workouts are a great way to get exercise and enjoy the great outdoors, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

    • Always wear a heart rate monitor or fitness tracker, and be aware of your body’s signs of fatigue.
    • Bring a phone or other communication device with you, in case of an emergency.
    • Choose a location with good lighting and minimal distractions.
    • Dress appropriately for the weather and season.
    • Bring water and snacks, especially if you’re planning a long workout.
    • Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for obstacles or hazards.

    Conclusion

Sweat under the sun: outdoor workouts offer a unique set of benefits that are hard to replicate in a traditional gym setting. From the mental boost that comes with exercising outdoors to the variety of exercises and locations, outdoor workouts are an excellent way to get in shape and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you prefer bodyweight exercises, outdoor yoga and Pilates, cardio workouts, or strength training, there’s an outdoor workout for you.

  • How To Do It On A Budget

How To Do It On A Budget

Who doesn’t want to live a life of luxury and enjoy the finer things?

If you constantly feel that nice things are just outside your budget, it’s time you look at how to enjoy luxury living on a budget. I know where you’re coming from. The majority of us don’t earn the money we expected to earn, still have student debts, and don’t feel like there is anything spare for those luxuries.

You may not have pots of money sitting around, but you can still do luxury living.

    Consider Your Location

Many of the rich and famous live in places like Los Angeles, New York, and even New Orleans. Luxury real estate in these cities costs millions. The average price of a property in LA is over $1 million, and celebrities pay many times more than this for their slice of luxury.

If that’s beyond your reach, then consider a different location. The average price of a home in Phoenix, Arizona, is $430,036.

In other words, your money will go a lot further in a place like Phoenix. A quick trip to the area will show you that, with a little help from jumbo mortgages in Phoenix, you can purchase a luxury home for a fraction of the price elsewhere.

As the world is increasingly digital and more people work remotely, living in Phoenix won’t reduce your ability to be part of any social scene. You may even be surprised by the number of celebrities living in the area!

Work Out What You Consider Luxury

When considering luxury living, take a moment to think about what you consider luxury. Most people conjure up images of massive houses, swimming pools, home cinema complexes, and more. However, luxury is different for everyone.

Space is commonly demanded, as is the use of high-quality materials in build and décor. Pools aren’t always essential, even if they do portray the image of luxury.

Doing luxury living on a budget means thinking carefully before purchasing. Your home, and the elements inside it, need to have plenty of customization. That’s what will make it feel luxurious.

    Small Details Make A Difference

Living in luxury means every part of your life is a little easier.

You may not have the budget for staff, but you don’t need them waiting on your every need. Instead, you need to use technology to make your life more luxurious.

There are plenty of apps that can help you feel like you’re being waited on, such as automate tasks, or order food. There are even apps that will guide you to the best shops, restaurants, etc.

The same applies to your home. While there are some areas you’ll want to thin bigger, such as creating a luxury dressing room. Many small details can make your property look and feel luxurious.

For example, keeping a more minimalistic feel, adding unique DIY wall art pieces, using unique lamps to help make statements, and even large mirrors that feel luxurious and increase the level of light in your home.

Read and speak to luxury interior designers, it will help you create a luxurious feel in your home.

    Don’t Be Afraid To Fail

One of the biggest problems most of us face is the fear of losing money. It’s this that prevents us from investing in opportunities.

While all investing carries risk, the only way to increase your wealth and genuinely enjoy the luxury lifestyle is to invest and learn from your mistakes.

Most of the richest and most successful people in the world have faced failure first. It’s not being afraid to fail which makes them successful. Overcoming the fear of failure is critical if you want the luxury lifestyle.

    Pause!

The ultimate in luxury is having all the time in the world to do what you want. You don’t actually need money for this. Next weekend, pause. Don’t commit to anything, and don’t do anything. Those who live in luxury are used to having the time to do nothing. Try it; it can be surprisingly invigorating.

    Summing Up

There are things you can do to gain a luxurious lifestyle. This includes booking luxurious holidays, dining at the best restaurants, and being seen at the latest hot spots.

However, to really enjoy the luxury lifestyle, you first need to build your self-confidence. You must believe you deserve luxury. This will become obvious in your demeanor, and others will notice it. More importantly, it will help you decide what you consider luxury and focus on that.

  • Can bacteria in your gut make you want to exercise?

Can bacteria in your gut make you want to exercise?

Have you ever wondered why some people enjoy exercise while others find it unbearable? New research hints at a surprising connection: the gut microbiome! You read that right—the trillions of tiny organisms, or microbes, that live in our digestive system may play a role in whether we feel like exercising.

We know that the bacteria in our guts are important for our digestion and overall health. Recent research suggests that our guts also communicate with our brains. This “gut-brain axis” is linked to mood, stress, and maybe even our motivation to exercise.

    Mice, microbes, and motivation

How exactly might gut microbes influence our motivation to exercise? To answer that question, NIH-funded researchers studied exercise performance in mice. They found that mice ran less on their exercise wheel when they had depleted gut microbiomes (meaning fewer microbes). They also got tired faster. This suggests these microbes might have a say in how much the mice wanted to exercise…and how much exercise they were physically able to tolerate.

Exercise increases dopamine, a brain chemical associated with pleasure, motivation, and reward (if you’ve ever experienced a “runner’s high,” that’s because of dopamine). As expected, exercise increased dopamine in the mice with healthy gut microbiomes, which motivated them to keep moving. But this increase in dopamine didn’t happen when the mice’s microbiomes were depleted.

The gut talks to the brain

Digging deeper, the researchers learned that bacteria in the gut produce a certain chemical that communicates with the brain. During exercise, these chemicals tell the brain to release more dopamine. The extra dopamine makes exercise feel more rewarding and energizing. When this communication pathway was interrupted, the mice lost their motivation to move.

What does this mean for human health?

It’s hard to say for sure. While motivation is important, there’s more to the story for people than for these furry research subjects. This research happened in a controlled setting to allow researchers to isolate the effects of gut bacteria. Our lives are more complex, and scientists are still exploring how our gut bacteria might influence our exercise choices.

We’ll need more research to understand the relationship between our own gut microbes and why, when, and how we choose to move our bodies. But if it does work the same for humans, we could find new ways to make getting active more enjoyable, rewarding, and achievable for everyone.

  • COVID-19 and Obesity – The Nutrition Source

This page will be updated as new information becomes available. Last update: 10.24.20

The novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has created a global pandemic with its syndrome, COVID-19. The number of people affected by COVID-19 continues to increase worldwide, and information about risk factors for severe COVID-19 and mortality is emerging almost daily.

Older adults and those who are immunocompromised due to underlying medical conditions are at higher risk for developing serious complications from COVID-19 illness. For both young and old adults, emerging data suggests that obesity may be linked to risk of severe illness and hospitalization. [1,2] A recent systematic review of 75 studies found that compared to people of healthy weight, individuals with obesity were 113% more likely to be hospitalized, 74% more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit, and 48% more likely to die. [3] The review incorporated earlier research looking at obesity and COVID-19, including:

    • A study in France which showed that the risk for needing ventilators in patients with COVID-19 was more than 7-fold higher for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) above 35, compared to those with a BMI less than 25. [4]
    • A study in New York City which found people younger than 60 years of age with a BMI above 30 were significantly more likely to be admitted to care than individuals with a BMI less than 30. [2]
    • Additional research from New York City demonstrating that patients with obesity had significantly higher rates of admission to intensive care units or rates of death. [5]
    • A study In Mexico where COVID-19 patients with obesity had higher rates of admissions to intensive care units, were more likely to be intubated, and had a five-fold increased risk for mortality. [6]

Currently, the mechanisms responsible for greater COVID-19 severity in individuals with obesity are unknown. However, insights from other viral infections like influenza point to potential issues including reduced immune function, chronic systemic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and reduced pulmonary function. [3] Also, people with obesity are more likely to have other diseases that are risk factors for severe COVID-19, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney/liver disease, and hyperlipidemia. [3,7]

Its also important to note that COVID-19 has disproportionately affected racial/ethnic minority groups in the United States; in particular, Black, Hispanic, and Native American communities. These racial/ethnic minority populations experience higher hospitalization rates, severe illness, morbidity, and mortality from COVID-19. Long-standing systemic health and social inequities have contributed to such disparities, which increase the risk of COVID-19 severity. [8,9]

The pandemic has highlighted several structural shortcomings of our healthcare system, and the need for coordinated federal obesity prevention funding and efforts. COVID-19 has laid bare the devastating impact of the intersection between infectious and chronic disease. Focusing efforts on policies and strategies that target the root causes of obesity and metabolic health, particularly among vulnerable and racial/ethnic minority populations, continue to be as critical as ever.

There are some steps that everyone can take to protect their health during COVID-19, including: [10]

    • Practice social distancing, wear masks, and wash your hands often.
    • Ensure that your underlying health conditions are being well-managed with prescribed medications and according to you doctor’s recommendations. Don’t miss important medical appointments, reach out to see if telehealth visits are available, and don’t skip refills on important medications that help manage your conditions.

Although we do not have concrete evidence regarding specific dietary factors that can reduce risk of COVID-19, we do know that eating a healthy diet, being physically active, managing stress, and getting enough sleep support our immune system. Even moderate improvements in nutrition and physical activity may improve metabolic health and reduce the severity of COVID-19 risks.

  • Best Massage Chairs For Your Needs: Elevate Your Self-Care Routine

Best Massage Chairs For Your Needs: Elevate Your Self-Care Routine

Massage chairs have become an increasingly popular option for individuals looking to experience the therapeutic benefits of massage without having to visit a professional. These chairs are designed to mimic the techniques used by professional massage therapists, offering a range of settings that can target various body parts, including the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and feet.

The evolution of massage chair technology has led to the development of chairs that can provide deep tissue massage, Shiatsu, Swedish massage, and even zero-gravity positioning, which elevates the legs to the level of the heart, reducing stress on the spine and promoting circulation.

    Uses of Massage Chairs

The primary purpose of a massage chair is to relieve tension and stress in the muscles, promoting relaxation and well-being. However, the benefits extend beyond just relaxation. Regular use of a massage chair can help improve circulation, reduce muscle stiffness, alleviate pain, and even contribute to better sleep quality.

Some massage chairs are equipped with heat therapy and air compression features, which can further enhance the massage experience and provide additional therapeutic benefits.

Massage chairs are especially useful for individuals who suffer from chronic back pain, muscle soreness from physical activity, or stress-related tension. They can be an excellent investment for those with sedentary lifestyles or jobs that require long hours of sitting, as they help counteract the negative effects of prolonged inactivity.

Athletes and physically active individuals may also find massage chairs beneficial for post-workout recovery, as they can aid in muscle recovery and reduce the risk of injury.

Who Should Consider a Massage Chair?

Massage chairs are suitable for a wide range of people, but they are particularly beneficial for certain groups. Individuals with chronic pain conditions, such as lower back pain, arthritis, or fibromyalgia, may find relief from the regular use of a massage chair.

Those who experience stress and anxiety can also benefit from the calming effects of a massage, which can help lower cortisol levels and promote relaxation.

For older adults, massage chairs can provide a convenient way to manage age-related aches and pains. The gentle massage settings can help improve circulation and flexibility, which can be particularly beneficial for those with limited mobility. Additionally, busy professionals who have limited time for self-care may find that a massage chair offers a convenient way to unwind after a long day.

Massage chairs are also a good option for families. Many models come with adjustable settings that can be tailored to different users, making them a versatile addition to any household.
