    Kids often like to try different makeup and hair color products once they reach their teen years. If your teen has eczema (atopic dermatitis), they will need to pay extra attention to what’s in these products. Here’s how they can avoid common skin irritants, manage acne alongside eczema and choose makeup, sunscreen and hair care options that won’t trigger flare-ups.

    Contact dermatitis: how it affects eczema

    Certain ingredients in makeup and hair care products can cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction like a rash. This is called contact dermatitis. Here are tips to help choose makeup and hair care products carefully to minimize the chance of additional eczema flares caused by contact dermatitis.

    Eczema-friendly skin & hair care tips for teens

    With such a variety of products available, finding eczema-friendly skin and hair care products may seem overwhelming. When choosing products:

    • Check the ingredients (see a list of ingredients to avoid below).

    • Do a patch test when using new products (apply a small amount to see if your skin reacts).

    • Watch for signs of irritation whenever skin and hair care products are used. Stop using products that irritate the skin, and let your teen’s doctor know.

    • Check with your teen’s doctor if you have questions before using a new product.

    Acne & eczema: how to manage them together

    Managing teen acne while treating an eczema flare can be a juggling act. Many products promoted to treat acne can trigger an eczema flare.

    While prolonged use of certain eczema treatments can cause acne, proper use of prescriptions and a careful skin care routine can balance both concerns.

    To avoid side effects like acne, only use prescribed topical steroid creams, topical calcineurin inhibitor creams or ointments and over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams during a flare as directed by the doctor. Look for products that have “noncomedogenic” on the label. Noncomedogenic products contain ingredients that won’t clog the skin’s pores.

    Also, diet changes—especially drinking more water and avoiding sugary drinks—may help reduce acne. For some teens, eliminating cow’s milk and high glycemic foods (breads, cereals and sweets) may also minimize acne flares.

    Check the ingredients to avoid eczema triggers

    Take time to read the ingredients label of new skin care and beauty products you plan to use. Some ingredients are known irritants and can cause eczema flares. In general, look for products say they are “fragrance free,” “hypoallergenic” and made for “sensitive skin.”

    Ingredients that may irritate the skin

    Keep in mind that each person may have no reaction, or different reactions, to these ingredients.

    • Fragrance (some fragrance-free products have masking fragrances like cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol, isoeugenol, geranoil (added to essential oils), hydroxycitronellal and oakmoss).

    • Essential and botanic oils

    • Urea (helpful for some skin conditions but not eczema)

    • Lanolin (derived from oil glands of sheep; can be an allergen)

    • Retinoids (used for acne but can trigger eczema).

    • Cocamidopropyl betaine (foaming agent derived from coconut oil)

    • p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), which is added to many hair dyes

    • Alcohols like ethanol, isopropanol and propanol.

    • Preservatives

      • Parabens (methylparaben or butylparaben)

      • Methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone

      • Benzalkonium chloride (found in eye care products such as contact lens solutions)

    • Sulfates like sodium laureth sulfate and sodium laurel sulfate can strip hair of its natural oils

    • Phthalatates (solvent added to help dissolve ingredients in cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, lotions, nail polish and aftershave). May be listed as di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), deithyl phthalate (DEP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP) or Benzyle butyl phthalate (BzPB).

    Daily facial care routine for teens with eczema

    Cleaning and moisturizing are key elements of a good facial care routine for a teen with eczema. Teens should wash their face at least once a day, but twice a day is recommended.

    Cleanser

    Oil-or water-based formulas are best when looking for an eczema-friendly cleanser. Use an alcohol-free, nondrying facial cleanser or soap substitute to gently cleanse the face, remove bacteria and prevent clogged pores. Apply the cleanser with your fingertips and gently rinse it off with lukewarm water. Gently pat dry with a towel. Rubbing, hot water or anything else that irritates your skin can cause eczema or acne to flare.

    Moisturizer

    A moisturized base layer is needed before applying makeup. While skin is still slightly damp from washing, apply medicine, if needed, and then moisturizer. The moisturizer can be cream or lotion. Consider using a moisturizer with sunscreen, which provides extra protection.

    How to pick an eczema-friendly sunscreen

    Use a sunscreen that has “broad spectrum” on the label. That means it will screen out both UV-B and UV-A rays. Also look for a sun protection factor (SFP) or at least 15 or 30. More research is needed to see if sunscreen with more than SPF 50 offers any extra protection. For sensitive areas of the body, such as the nose, cheeks, tops of ears and shoulders, use mineral-based sunscreens that are broad spectrum and alcohol- and fragrance-free.

    Makeup remover

    All makeup should be removed before bedtime. Use a gentle water-based makeup remover using a clean cotton makeup remover cloth. After wiping off the makeup, use your regular cleanser and moisturizer. Be cautious with makeup wipes, which can irritate the skin.

    Makeup

    Eczema flares around the eyes, around the lips, on or around the eyebrows and on the cheeks can be a concern for teens who use makeup. During a flare, it is best to pause makeup use in affected areas and focus on moisturizing, hydrating and repairing the skin. On healthy skin, makeup application should be tailored to individual skin needs and should always start with a clean face.

    Eczema-safe hair care tips for teens

    Washing, styling and coloring hair can cause eczema flares in areas touched by hair care products. In addition to fragrance, preservatives, parabens, teens with eczema should also avoid PPD. PPD is found in hair dye, henna tattoos and many teens hair products. It is one of the most common allergens and is known to trigger symptoms such as itching and flaking.

    RFK Jr. Fact-Checked for Spouting ‘Dangerous Falsehoods’ About Vaccines on Fox News: ‘I Have Receipts’

    Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a series of inaccurate claims about vaccines during a Fox News appearance Thursday.

    Kennedy claimed that “97% of the people on the [CDC vaccine advisory] committee had conflicts of interest,” that children receive “between 69 and 92” mandatory vaccines, and that “none of them have been safety tested” — aside from the COVID-19 vaccine. He also asserted that vaccines are designed to “deregulate” the immune system, linking them to an “epidemic of chronic disease.”

    Dr. Jake Scott, a doctor specializing in infectious disease and associate professor at Stanford Medical School, issued a detailed rebuttal on social media, accusing Kennedy of spreading “egregious, dangerous falsehoods” and backing up his criticism with data from peer-reviewed studies and CDC records.



    “Fox News might not fact-check him, but I will,” Scott wrote. “I’ve reviewed the trials. I’ve catalogued them. I have receipts.”

    Scott went claim by claim.

    Kennedy said 97% of CDC vaccine committee members had conflicts of interest, but didn’t cite where he obtained that figure. Scott refuted the claim, sharing findings from a Reuter’s investigation which found that while 41% of members received a form of industry payment, it was mostly in small sums for travel or meals. Furthermore, the CDC has stringent guidelines in place requiring recusals for any conflicts.

    Even the Fox anchor commented that Kennedy’s claim that children now receive between 69 and 92 mandatory vaccines sounded quite high. It was disputed by Scott as well, who noted that vaccine mandates are set by states, and most states mandate slightly over 30 immunizations.

    Regarding Kennedy’s claim that no vaccines other than the Covid vaccine have gone through placebo-controlled trials, Scott said, “One of the most misleading claims I’ve ever seen a government official make on national television.” He went on to link to a database that contains 164 placebo-controlled vaccine trials, and specified at least one example for every routine childhood vaccine.

    Kennedy said, “Nobody has any idea what the risk profiles are on these products,” which Scott countered, noting that 90% of vaccine studies include safety outcome reports, and listing four methods of post-licensure safety monitoring. He cited three instances where safety issues with vaccines were discovered and acted upon.

    Finally, Scott dismissed Kennedy’s claim that “vaccines deregulate the immune system.”

    What About Elderberry, Echinacea, and Cranberries for Colds and the Flu? 

    How effective are flu shots, elderberries, echinacea, and cranberries?

    The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over the age of six months get a routine flu shot every year, unless you have some sort of contraindication, such as an allergy to any of the vaccine’s components. CDC recommends getting vaccinated by the end of October, but it may even be beneficial when received in December or later. How effective are flu vaccines? It depends on the year, but, as you can see below and at 0:33 in my video Friday Favorites: Elderberry Benefits and Side Effects: Does It Help with Colds and the Flu?, the flu vaccine typically reduces the risk of getting the flu by about 40 to 50 percent.

    So, in healthy adults, we can say with moderate certainty that we can decrease our risk of influenza from about 2 percent each year down to just under 1 percent. Older adults may get a similar relative risk reduction, but the baseline risk is higher and the consequences greater, so the absolute benefits are greater, too. In kids, flu vaccines shine; there’s a high certainty of evidence of a substantial drop in risk. But even in this kind of best-case scenario, there’s still a risk with vaccination, so what else can we do?

    In the United States alone, each year, Americans experience millions of cases of influenza and hundreds of millions of colds. What about elderberry supplements? In a test tube, elderberry extracts can inhibit pathogens, including the flu virus. In a petri dish, it can rev up the production of flu-fighting molecules from human immune system cells, like tumor necrosis factor, as much as nearly 45-fold. Elderberry juice can help mice fight off the flu. But what about actual people?

    The first clinical trial was published back in the 1990s: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to treat flu-like symptoms. Researchers found that the odds for improvement before the fifth day in those in the treated group were more than 20 times the odds of the participants in the control group (p showed similar accelerated healing in the elderberry groups, as you can see here and at 1:54 in my video

    I was excited to see this study—“Elderberry Supplementation Reduces Cold Duration and Symptoms in Air-Travelers”—given a 200-city book tour I was embarking on. It was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 312 economy class passengers. While taking elderberry didn’t seem to prevent people from coming down with cold symptoms, the duration and severity of symptoms in those who did get a cold seemed to have been lessened, and they suffered an average of about five days instead of seven.

    A similar study using the herb echinacea found a lessening of symptom scores, but it was of only borderline statistical significance. Nevertheless, even though most of the individual trials didn’t find statistically significant improvements, when all such studies were compiled, it seems there may be about a 20 percent decrease incidence of colds, as seen below and at 2:50 in my video.

    Note, though, that there is a concern about publication bias and selective reporting. A number of findings and some entire studies seem to be MIA, suggesting that negative studies may have been quietly shelved. So, we aren’t really sure about echinacea, but all the elderberry studies seem to have positive results, suggesting elderberry supplementation “provides an effective treatment option when advanced or more invasive care [more serious treatment] is not warranted.” This conclusion came from someone with apparent conflicts of interest, though. In fact, each of the four elderberry studies was funded by the elderberry product companies themselves.

    Any other berries that might be helpful? A randomized, placebo-controlled, interventional study—funded, predictably, by Ocean Spray—found that the gamma-delta-T-cells of those drinking a low-calorie cranberry juice beverage for ten weeks appeared to be proliferating at nearly fivefold the rate. These immune cells “serve as a first line of defense.” Though the study participants didn’t get fewer colds, they did seem to suffer less, but not enough to prevent days missed from work or an impairment of their activities, as shown here and at 3:56 in my video

    At least cranberries have never been reported to cause pancreatitis. A man taking an elderberry extract not only suffered an attack of acute pancreatitis, a sudden painful inflammation of the pancreas, but it went away when he stopped it, then reappeared again years later when he tried taking it again, which suggests cause-and-effect. Why take elderberry extracts when you can just eat the elderberries themselves? Well, cooked are fine, but “consuming uncooked blue or black elderberries can cause nausea and vomiting.”

It turns out elderberry fruits form cyanide, such that eight people had to be medevacked out after someone brought freshly squeezed elderberry juice to a gathering.
