A Light, Slow, Deep (LSD) Breathing Meditation

Our breathing often becomes shallow, tense, or restricted during the day, and we don’t even notice it. Try this Light, Slow, Deep breathing technique to soften, relax, and expand again.

Thanks to our autonomic nervous system, life-sustaining processes like our heartbeat, digestion, and breathing all happen without us even having to pay attention. But our environments, stress levels, and other factors can definitely affect the health and efficiency of these processes.

For example, sitting hunched at our desks and staring at screens often means that our breathing gets shallow and irregular—which of course affects things like focus, energy, cognition, and attention.

This week, Shamash Alidina leads a guided breathing exercise called Light, Slow, Deep (or LSD), designed to re-set the breath in a way that opens the chest, relaxes tension, and calms the nervous system.

Most of us breathe backwards: too hard, too fast, and too much. We grip the breath without realizing it. LSD breathing is an invitation to do the opposite.

    • Light means breathing with softness, a gentleness, as if the breath is barely disturbing the air around you.
    • Slow means extending each breath, giving your nervous system time to settle like a pendulum that’s swinging wildly gradually finding its still point.
    • Deep means breathing low in your lower abdomen, not in your chest, but down where the lungs are roomiest and most efficient.

Together, these three qualities activate your parasympathetic nervous system—the calm, rest-and-digest part of you that so often gets crowded out by the noise of the day. Think of it like turning down volume on a radio that’s been playing too loud. You’re not switching it off, you’re just bringing it to a gentler, more natural level.

A Light, Slow, Deep (LSD) Breathing Meditation

Read and practice the guided meditation script below, pausing after each paragraph. Or listen to the audio practice.

    1. Begin by finding a comfortable position. You could be on a chair, cross legged on the floor, lying down. You could even be standing and just gently moving. Whatever allows your body to feel supported and at ease.
    2. The breath pattern we’ll use today is simple. Inhale for four counts, a gentle pause, and then exhale for six counts. A slightly longer exhale is key. Longer exhalations directly stimulate the vagus nerve, signaling to the whole system that you’re safe. So you don’t need to force anything, you just allow.
    3. Let’s begin. Take one natural breath first. No need to change anything yet.
    4. Now place one hand on your lower abdomen, just below your navel. This is your anchor and as you inhale you’re aiming to feel that hand rise like a tide coming in. As you exhale, the hand falls, the tide going out.
    5. Keep going with that easy breath. Inhaling softly through the nose, feeling the lower abdomen expand. In two, three, four, pause. And exhale slowly. Two, three, four, five, six. And then pause. In, two, three, four, and out two, three, four, five, six
    6. Inhale light and steady like warming mists rising from still water. Exhale, the breath dissolving. Body softening.
    7. If there is any tendency to grip or control as you’re breathing right now, see if you can loosen your hold on the breath by just a few percent. Inhaling, the lower abdomen is rising. Your chest is barely moving, your shoulders are down.
    8. Remember to keep exhaling longer than the inhale. All the way to the end. As you inhale, receive the breath rather than taking it in. Exhale and release. Not pushing, just allowing the air to naturally leave.
    9. Now let the breath find its own natural rhythm. Your job is to simply notice it now as the witness, not as the controller. If thoughts arise, and they will, treat them like clouds passing through the still sky. The sky doesn’t chase the clouds, it doesn’t argue with them, it simply holds them. Allows them to be there, and they pass.
    10. Feel how each complete breath cycle leaves you a little more still, a little more at ease. Like sediment settling slowly to the bottom of a glass of water. The water doesn’t try to clear itself, it just rests. And some clarity naturally comes. Breathing in, slow, light, low. Exhaling slowly. There’s nothing to achieve and nowhere to get to. The breath is simply happening—as it has, without effort, your whole life, long before any thought about it.
    11. One way to breathe lightly is to breathe quietly. See if you can breathe so quietly that you can hardly hear your own breath. As you do this, you may sense a tiny amount of air hunger, a tiny urge to breathe more. And that’s quite natural. In fact, that’s a good sign. You’re rebalancing your oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body. More oxygen is getting into your cells and into your brain when you breathe lightly.
    12. When you don’t force yourself too much, you may be able to notice a bit more saliva in your mouth, a bit more warmth in your hands and feet perhaps. This is the sign of the relaxation response engaging, a sign that you’re going in the right direction.
    13. As we move towards the end of the practice, start noticing the quality of your mind right now. Is it quieter than when we started? Is it more spacious? LSD breathing doesn’t create this stillness, it reveals it. The stillness was always there underneath the movement. The breath simply clears the way. Inhaling light, slow, deep. And exhale, releasing any last effort.
    14. Remember you can return to this breath at any point in your day—on the train, at your desk, before a difficult conversation. Doesn’t need any special equipment. Just a few moments.
    15. When you’re ready, slowly allow your eyes to open if they’ve been closed. Take the outside world back into you, and carry this quality into your day. Well done, you’ve given yourself 12 minutes of genuine rest. Thank you for joining me.

  • California Cannabis Shines a Light on the Practical Uses of Cannabis

California Cannabis Shines a Light on the Practical Uses of Cannabis

As cannabis continues to shed its historical stigma, it’s now being recognized as a multifaceted resource with a plethora of benefits. Once dismissed or criminalized, the plant now holds relevance across various sectors—medical, agricultural, industrial, and therapeutic. As noted by California Cannabis Testing Labs, advances in science and changes in public perception have sparked renewed interest in its potential, driving innovations and regulations alike. From chronic pain management to eco-friendly building materials and nutrient-rich food products, cannabis and its derivatives are starting to shape industries in subtle but significant ways.

    Setting the Stage

Cannabis has long held a complicated place in American society. Originally used for textiles and medicine in the 1800s, it later became stigmatized and heavily regulated throughout much of the 20th century. In recent decades, however, public opinion and policy have shifted, with more states enacting laws that support medical and industrial uses.

As legalization expands, so does awareness of cannabis’s broader potential. Beyond recreational use, people are exploring its value in healthcare, environmental sustainability, and consumer products. These changes have opened new conversations around how cannabis can contribute to everyday life in practical, regulated ways.

    Health and Medical Benefits

Cannabis has gained traction in modern medicine as a complementary option for managing various chronic conditions. Patients dealing with persistent pain from ailments like arthritis or fibromyalgia have turned to cannabis-based treatments when traditional medications fall short or cause unwanted side effects. Doctors in progressive states have begun incorporating cannabis into pain management protocols under careful supervision.

In oncology, cannabis is frequently used to ease nausea and boost appetite during chemotherapy. Epilepsy patients, particularly those with severe forms like Dravet syndrome, have found relief through CBD-based medications that reduce seizure frequency. The distinction between THC and CBD plays a vital role here—while THC is psychoactive, CBD offers therapeutic benefits without the high, making it more widely accepted in clinical settings.

Although research is ongoing, medical professionals in certain states are more comfortable recommending cannabis as part of a broader treatment plan. Conversations among healthcare providers now include dosage, strain selection, and patient education.

    Mental Wellness and Everyday Relief

Anxiety, sleep disruption, and chronic stress are common struggles in today’s world, and some individuals have turned to cannabis as an alternative means of support. Low-THC or CBD-rich strains are often used to promote relaxation without impairing daily functioning, offering a gentler option than conventional pharmaceuticals.

Emerging studies suggest cannabinoids may interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system to support emotional balance and regulate stress responses. Though not yet fully understood, these findings are encouraging and have prompted further academic interest. Mental health clinics have started integrating cannabinoid treatments alongside therapy in some pilot programs. As more practitioners acknowledge cannabis’s therapeutic potential, there’s a growing emphasis on proper dosing and product quality.

    Hemp as a Sustainable Resource

Hemp, often overshadowed by its psychoactive cousin, is making a strong comeback as an eco-friendly alternative across multiple industries. As a fast-growing, low-impact crop, it requires minimal water and no synthetic fertilizers, making it an attractive option for sustainable agriculture. It also contributes to carbon sequestration, aiding in the fight against climate change.

Its versatility is hard to ignore. Builders are turning to hempcrete, a biodegradable material with excellent insulation properties, while fashion brands are incorporating hemp fibers into textiles praised for their durability and breathability. Paper made from hemp can also be produced with fewer chemicals compared to traditional wood pulp, reducing environmental strain. Bioplastics made from hemp polymers are also gaining traction in the packaging industry.

Farmers in several regions have begun to rotate hemp into their crop cycles not only for its commercial value but also for its ability to restore soil health. Its deep roots help prevent erosion and can even draw contaminants from the ground, making it a valuable tool in regenerative farming.

    Nutrition and Consumer Products

Hemp seeds have quietly gained status as a nutrient-rich superfood, packed with protein, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and essential minerals. They’re finding their way into smoothies, protein bars, and even dairy alternatives like hemp milk, appealing to health-conscious consumers seeking plant-based nutrition.

Cannabinoids like CBD have become popular in skincare and wellness products, from calming balms to anti-aging serums. These items are now widely available in both niche wellness shops and mainstream retail outlets. Growing demand has pushed companies to invest in transparency and third-party testing to ensure product safety and consistency. Brands are also innovating with edibles, teas, and even pet care products that include hemp extracts.

Research, Regulation, and the Road Ahead

Despite growing interest, cannabis research still faces hurdles due to inconsistent legal frameworks. Many scientists struggle to access quality plant material for study, limiting long-term investigations into safety, efficacy, and optimal dosing methods. Federal restrictions continue to complicate the approval process for clinical trials and university-led studies.

Nonetheless, momentum is building. Universities and private institutions are launching programs dedicated to cannabis science, and governments are beginning to fund more structured research efforts. Academic journals are seeing a steady rise in peer-reviewed publications focused on cannabinoid pharmacology and agricultural applications.

With a new outlook and ongoing discoveries, cannabis stands at the edge of mainstream integration, and the next decade will likely determine how responsibly and effectively it finds its place in modern society.

  • Warmth, Light, and Comfort: The Simple Pleasures of Hygge Living

Warmth, Light, and Comfort: The Simple Pleasures of Hygge Living

Warmth, Light, and Comfort: The Simple Pleasures of Hygge Living

In today’s fast-paced, technology-obsessed world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and forget to appreciate the simple things. But what if we told you that there’s a way to slow down, relax, and find joy in the everyday moments? Enter hygge (pronounced hoo-gah), a Danish concept that has taken the world by storm. In this article, we’ll explore the concept of hygge living, its significance, and how to incorporate its simple pleasures into your daily life.

    What is Hygge?

Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish word that is often translated to "cozy" or "snug," but it’s more than just a feeling. It’s a way of living that embodies warmth, comfort, and togetherness. The concept of hygge is deeply rooted in Danish culture, where it’s all about slowing down, being present, and finding joy in the simple moments. It’s about creating a sense of warmth and coziness that makes you feel like you’re wrapped in a big, fuzzy blanket on a cold winter’s night.

    The Three Pillars of Hygge

At the core of hygge living are three essential elements: warmth, light, and comfort. These elements work together to create a sense of hygge that’s hard to find anywhere else.

    Warmth

Warmth is at the heart of hygge. It’s about creating a sense of togetherness, comfort, and security. In Denmark, this is often achieved through the use of candles, fireplaces, and cozy textiles like wool blankets and plush throw pillows. But warmth isn’t just about physical temperature; it’s also about emotional warmth, like the feel of a warm hug or a comforting word from a loved one.

    Light

Light is the next essential element of hygge. In Denmark, the concept is all about embracing the darkness of winter and making the most of the little light we have. This is achieved through the use of soft, warm light sources like candles, lanterns, and fairy lights. Light is about creating a sense of peace and tranquility, and it’s often used to create a cozy atmosphere that invites relaxation and contemplation.

    Comfort

Comfort is the final piece of the hygge puzzle. It’s about creating a sense of security and well-being through the use of soft, plush fabrics, comfortable furnishings, and a peaceful environment. In Denmark, this means embracing a simple, unpretentious lifestyle that values simplicity and practicality.

Incorporating Hygge into Your Daily Life

While the concept of hygge may seem simple, it’s actually quite profound. By incorporating these three elements into your daily life, you can experience a sense of warmth, comfort, and togetherness that’s hard to find elsewhere. Here are some simple ways to get started:

    • Create a cozy atmosphere: Use candles, lanterns, and fairy lights to create a warm, inviting glow. Add some soft, plush textiles like throw blankets and pillows to create a comfortable space.
    • Slow down: Take time to appreciate the simple things, like a good book, a warm cup of coffee, or a peaceful walk in nature.
    • Embrace simplicity: Let go of the hustle and bustle of daily life and focus on what’s truly important. This might mean saying no to a busy social calendar or taking a break from technology.
    • Create a cozy routine: Develop a daily routine that includes activities that bring you joy, like reading, taking a relaxing bath, or cooking a healthy meal.

    Conclusion

In an increasingly fast-paced world, hygge offers a much-needed respite from the chaos. By embracing warmth, light, and comfort, we can create a sense of coziness and togetherness that’s hard to find elsewhere. Whether you’re looking to create a more peaceful lifestyle or simply want to appreciate the simple things, hygge is definitely worth exploring.

  • Best Red and Infrared Light Therapy Devices for Enhanced Health and Wellness

Best Red and Infrared Light Therapy Devices for Enhanced Health and Wellness

In recent years, the popularity of red and infrared light therapy devices has surged, captivating the attention of health enthusiasts and professionals alike. These innovative tools harness specific wavelengths of light to promote healing, enhance skin health, and support overall well-being. This article explores the benefits of red and infrared light therapy, how it works, and what to consider when choosing the right device for your needs.

Understanding Red and Infrared Light Therapy

Red and infrared light therapy utilizes low-level wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and stimulate various biological processes. Red light, typically in the 600 to 700 nanometer (nm) range, is known for its ability to enhance skin health, boost collagen production, and reduce inflammation. On the other hand, infrared light, which ranges from 700 nm to 1,100 nm, penetrates deeper into the tissues, promoting healing at a cellular level and improving circulation.

Benefits of Red and Infrared Light Therapy

    1. Promotes Wound Healing: One of the most significant benefits of red and infrared light therapy is its ability to accelerate wound healing. Studies have shown that these wavelengths enhance cellular metabolism, increase blood flow, and stimulate tissue repair, making them effective for treating injuries, surgical wounds, and even chronic ulcers.
    2. Enhances Skin Health: Red light therapy is increasingly used in skincare routines. It can improve skin tone and texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance overall complexion by stimulating collagen production. Additionally, it helps with conditions such as acne and psoriasis by reducing inflammation and promoting healing.
    3. Alleviates Pain and Inflammation: Many individuals suffering from chronic pain or inflammation have found relief through red and infrared light therapy. These therapies work by reducing inflammation in affected areas and promoting circulation, which can help alleviate conditions such as arthritis, joint pain, and muscle soreness.
    4. Improves Muscle Recovery: Athletes and fitness enthusiasts can benefit from red light therapy as it aids muscle recovery after intense workouts. By increasing blood flow and reducing muscle soreness, it can help improve overall performance and reduce recovery time.
    5. Supports Mood and Sleep: Exposure to red and infrared light can positively influence mood and sleep patterns. These therapies may help regulate circadian rhythms, promoting better sleep quality and enhancing overall mental well-being.

Choosing the Right Red and Infrared Light Therapy Device

When selecting a red and infrared light therapy device, consider the following factors:

    • Wavelength Range: Look for devices that offer a combination of red (600-700 nm) and infrared (700-1100 nm) wavelengths to maximize therapeutic benefits.
    • Power Output: Higher power output generally means more effective treatment. Devices with higher irradiance can deliver light more efficiently to the target area.
    • Treatment Area: Consider the size of the device and the area you want to treat. Larger devices can cover more surface area, while handheld models are ideal for targeted treatment.
    • Ease of Use: Choose a device that is user-friendly and fits seamlessly into your routine. Some devices come with timers and adjustable settings for convenience.

  • Filling the Body With Light: 12 Minute Meditation

Filling the Body With Light: 12 Minute Meditation

Vidyamala Burch guides us through a calming body scan meditation that focuses on bringing light and ease into the body.

This guided body scan for filling the body with light invites you to imagine a soft, soothing sensation radiating throughout your body, helping to ease any tension and cultivate a sense of relaxation. As you move through this meditation, you’ll have the opportunity to release stress and connect deeply with a feeling of inner peace, bringing lightness into your body and mind.

A Guided Meditation for Filling the Body with Light

    1. Begin by lying down. If this is uncomfortable for any reason, then of course, adopt another posture.
    2. Allow your awareness to settle down into the body. Take a deep breath in and then on the outbreath, give the weight up to gravity. Drop awareness into the points of contact between the body and the surface it’s resting upon.
    3. Allow the breathing to settle and to find its own natural rhythm. Sense the swelling on the in breath and subsiding on the out breath in the whole body.
    4. Let your awareness flow down through the body, down through the legs all the way into the toes, feeling any sensations in the toes. If you can’t feel anything for any reason, that’s fine. Just see if you can be aware of the toes of inhabiting the toes with awareness
    5. Imagine that the toes are filled with light, with spaciousness, with ease. Let the sense flow down into the feet, the tops, the ankles. Imagine the feet drenched in light, drenched in radiance, drenched and open in their softness.
    6. Next, allow the sense to pour up through the ankles into the lower legs. Let this quality of light of radiance overflow and pour into the knees, filling into the shape of the knees, whatever position they’re in. Visualize it pulling up and saturating the thighs, the big muscles of the thighs, the bones, the thighs full of this radiant awareness.
    7. If you’ve got any discomfort anywhere in the legs of the feet, see if it can be soothed and softened by this quality of light and radiance. Next, envision it pouring up through the hips and the buttocks. Let the buttocks be soft, whether you’re lying down or sitting. Full of life, full of radiance.
    8. Next, allow this quality to pour up and to fill the abdomen, the belly. Feel it deep inside the body, noticing the way the abdomen swells a little bit on the end breath and subsides on the outbreath, being careful not to force or strain, letting this be the natural breath with receptive awareness. Now allow this quality of light to pour up into the whole chest area, the ribs and the lungs filled with the rhythm of breathing.
    9. Feel the breath expanding the face on the in breath and subsiding the face on the outbreath. Be aware of the whole front of the torso, the abdomen and the chest full of light. Allow awareness to rest in the rhythm of breathing. Expanding. Subsiding. Expanding. Subsiding.
    10. Now allow your awareness to flow all the way down to the buttocks and the back of the body. Let this quality of light pour up into the lower back. Can you feel breathing expressing itself in the lower back in any way? Perhaps an expanding and a subsiding. Maybe the angle or the shape is changing a little bit with each in and out breath. If there’s any discomfort, see if you can let it be soothed and softened by this quality of light, radiance, and the rhythm of breathing.
    11. Now imagine this quality pouring up through the whole back of the body, the middle back and the upper back, the length of the spine, the breadth of the back. Notice the rhythm of breathing, expressing itself in the whole back of the body. Opening, subsiding, opening, subsiding, filling the whole torso, the front, the back, the sides, the inside, the surface. Feel the soothing, gentle lights and the rhythm of breathing and the whole torso soothing any hard edges, softening any contraction.
    12. Let this quality pour through the shoulders, all the way down to the very tips of the fingers. Envision the shoulders, the arms, the hands, the fingers all becoming drenched and saturated and light. Feel the gentle, soothing quality, letting the hands rest in gravity. Let the shoulders fall away from the midline of the body as the arms rest in gravity.
    13. Now allow your awareness to flow up into the neck and the head. If you’re lying down, make sure you’re giving the weight of the head up to the pillow with the cushion fully. If you’re sitting, have the head poised on the top of the neck as best you can. Allow this quality of light and radiance to completely saturate the whole head, even the brain. Even the brain can rest in this quality of brightness! Feel it moving through your whole face: forehead, eyes, cheeks, nose, lips, jaw, tongue, mouth. Imagine them all full of softness, full of light.
    14. Finally, let’s expand awareness to the whole body: the legs, the torso, the arms, neck, head, face. Rest your awareness very deeply inside this quality of the whole body being filled with light, filled with ease, or the possibility of ease, and breathing. Any hard edges, any contraction soothed and eased by breath by light, by this quality of resting here moment by moment.
    15. As we begin to prepare to bring this meditation to a close, see how it feels to form an intention to take this quality with you into your day, if you’re doing this during the day, or into your sleep, if you’re doing it in the evening. This quality of rest is light, brightness, and softness. When it comes time to move, do it gently and carefully as you prepare to engage with whatever you’re going to do next. Thank you so much for practicing with me today.

  • Study Says Even Light Smoking During Pregnancy Affects Newborn’s Health

Study Says Even Light Smoking During Pregnancy Affects Newborn’s Health

Smoking during pregnancy is known to raise the risk of preterm delivery, low birth weight, and restricted growth of the fetus. But can light smoking during pregnancy, just one or two cigarettes, still harm the newborn?

A study published in Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health suggests “that there is no safe period and no safe level of cigarette smoking shortly before or during pregnancy.” The new study provides further evidence of the harmful effects of smoking during pregnancy, emphasizing the need to completely quit the habit for the baby’s health.

The research team utilized data from the US National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) that has recorded a total of 15,379,982 live births between 2016 and 2019. After filtering out factors such as multiple births, high blood pressure or diabetes before pregnancy, and lack of information on the smoking status 3 months before and during their pregnancy, the researchers narrowed it down to 12,150,535 mother-infant pairs.

The study noted that over 9% of them reported smoking cigarettes before pregnancy, 7% during the first trimester, 6% in the second trimester, and around 6% in the third trimester. The intensity of smoking was measured based on the number of cigarettes smoked per day: 0, 1–2, 3–5, 6–9, 10–19, and 20 or more.

“The women who smoked had more risk factors for neonatal health issues: they tended to be younger, non-Hispanic White, unmarried, and obese, and to have low educational attainment, more previous births, and fewer attendances for prenatal care,” the news release stated.

The estimated prevalence of neonatal health issues was around 9.5%. Neonatal health issues included cases where newborns required immediate assisted ventilation, ventilation for more than 6 hours, NICU admission for continuous mechanical ventilation, surfactant replacement therapy, as well as cases of suspected sepsis, seizures, or serious neurological problems.

“Smoking either before pregnancy or in each of the 3 trimesters of pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of major neonatal health issues, either separately or combined, after adjusting for potentially influential factors, including age, ethnicity, and weight (BMI) before pregnancy,” the news release stated.

In cases where expectant mothers smoked before pregnancy, there was more 27% higher risk of having more than one major neonatal health issue. The risk was 31-32% higher if she smoked at any time during her pregnancy.

When compared to expectant mothers who did not smoke at all, both smoking before pregnancy and during any point of pregnancy puts newborns at higher risk of having more than one health issue.

“Even light smoking—1–2 cigarettes a day—was associated with a heightened risk of major neonatal health issues. For example, among mothers who smoked 1–2 cigarettes a day before pregnancy, the risk was 16% higher, rising to 31% higher if they smoked 20 or more a day,” the news release stated.

When an expectant mother smokes just one or two cigarettes a day, the newborn’s risk of admission to intensive care is 13% higher. This risk increases to 29% for those who smoke 20 or more cigarettes daily.
