  • Hookah: What’s Old Is New—And Unsafe

Hookah: What’s Old Is New—And Unsafe

    Fewer teens today
smoke cigarettes than twenty years ago, but more are discovering new—and old—ways to use tobacco, including hookah, that are no less harmful to their health.

    What is hookah?

Hookah (also called argilah, nargile, and hitboo) is the traditional name for waterpipes that were first used centuries ago in South Asia and the Middle East. A social and often shared form of tobacco use, hookah smoking has been gaining popularity among teens and young adults in the United States.

    How does it work?

Typically, groups of people sit around a hookah to smoke a shredded tobacco mixture known as
sisha, which is usually sweetened with fruity or candy flavors. The hookah’s vase-like tower is heated near the top by lighting charcoal or bits of wood. Smoke and vapor from the combusted tobacco bubble through the hookah’s water chamber and into one or more attached hoses from which users inhale before passing it to the next person in the group.

    Smoking hookah is not safe.

Because smoke from the tobacco passes through water, many people mistakenly believe hookahs are safer than cigarettes. However, studies show hookah does not effectively filter out harmful substances from the smoke. Hookah smokers may end up breathing in higher amounts of nicotine, metals, and toxic chemicals. Germs are also spread on the hoses’ shared mouthpieces.

Here are some important facts about hookah:

    • One hookah session is the same as smoking 100 or more cigarettes. Hookah sessions can last half an hour or more, and the amount of smoke typically inhaled during this time is 100-200 times greater than the smoke inhaled from smoking one cigarette. Many of the same toxins that are inhaled in a cigarette are also breathed in through a hookah. Individuals may experience a rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, or even irregular heartbeats. In the long term, it also puts you at increased risk for several types of tobacco-related cancers that strike the lungs, bladder and other organs, as well as respiratory diseases.

    • Poisonous and addictive chemicals are in hookah smoke. Carbon monoxide, arsenic, selenium, mercury, lead, benzene, and other chemicals in hookah smoke can reach dangerous levels during a single session. These chemicals have been shown to be especially dangerous for pregnant women and children.

    • Hookah leads to addiction. Research shows that over 95% of the nicotine is still available when using hookah and is not filtered out by the water chamber. This is more than enough to cause addiction. People who smoke hookah are much more likely to begin smoking cigarettes. One
study using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data found that young adult hookah smokers were more than twice as likely to try cigarettes than nonsmokers. Hookah also has been linked to increased alcohol and marijuana use.

    • Sharing more than smoke. Because hookahs come into direct contact with the mouth and are shared by multiple smokers, infectious diseases of the lungs, mouth, lips, and gums can be spread to other people during a session. Contagious diseases ranging from oral herpes to the flu might be passed along, and more dangerous illnesses such as tuberculosis and hepatitis have been linked to Hookah use.

    Discuss the dangers of hookah.

According to the CDC, tobacco use remains our country’s leading cause of preventable disease and death. Tobacco use almost always begins during youth and young adulthood. It’s important to consider the health risks associated with hookah and other forms of tobacco smoking and to have a discussion with your family about it.

  • Simplifying Your Life: The Benefits of Embracing Minimalism

Simplifying Your Life: The Benefits of Embracing Minimalism

Simplifying Your Life: The Benefits of Embracing Minimalism

In today’s fast-paced, consumer-driven world, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest trends, gadgets, and accessories. However, this constant pursuit of more often leads to clutter, stress, and feelings of overwhelm. Simplifying your life by embracing minimalism can have a profound impact on your well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Breaking Free from the Cycle of Consumerism

The culture of consumerism has taught us that we need the latest and greatest to be happy and fulfilled. This relentless pursuit of new possessions has led to a culture of disposability, where products are often used once and then discarded. Not only is this unsustainable, but it’s also detrimental to our mental and emotional well-being. By embracing minimalism, we can break free from this cycle of consumption and focus on what truly adds value to our lives.

The Benefits of a Simplified Life

So, what are the benefits of embracing minimalism? Here are just a few:

    Reduces Stress and Anxiety

When our living and work spaces are cluttered and overwhelming, it’s easy to feel anxious and stressed. Minimalism helps to eliminate the distractions and noise that can contribute to these feelings, creating a sense of calm and clarity.

    Saves Time and Increases Productivity

When we’re surrounded by clutter, it’s easy to waste time searching for lost items, paying bills, and dealing with mail. By simplifying our spaces, we can save time and increase our productivity.

    Fosters Financial Responsibility

Minimalism encourages us to prioritize needs over wants and to spend our money wisely. By eliminating debt and saving for the future, we can reduce financial stress and increase our overall sense of security.

Allows for Greater Flexibility and Freedom

When we’re not burdened by material possessions, we’re free to pursue our passions and interests without the weight of obligations. Minimalism gives us the flexibility and freedom to live life on our own terms.

    Enhances Creativity and Innovation

When we’re surrounded by the beauty and simplicity of minimalism, our creativity and innovation are often stimulated. Minimalism encourages us to focus on what truly adds value to our lives and to think outside the box.

    Cultivates Gratitude and Appreciation

By focusing on what we truly have and appreciate, minimalism helps us to cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings in our lives.

    Practical Strategies for Embracing Minimalism

While embracing minimalism may seem daunting, it’s a journey that can be broken down into smaller, manageable steps. Here are some practical strategies to get you started:

    Start Small

Begin by simplifying one area of your life, such as your closet or desk. This will help you to build confidence and momentum.

    Identify Your Values

What’s most important to you? What values do you want to live by? Use this clarity to guide your decisions and simplify your life.

    Let Go of Unnecessary Items

Be ruthless! Let go of items that are broken, outdated, or no longer serve you.

    Create a Maintenance Plan

Minimalism is not a one-time achievement, but an ongoing process. Create a plan for maintaining your simplified space and life.

    Conclusion

Simplifying your life by embracing minimalism is a journey that can have a profound impact on your well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life. By breaking free from the cycle of consumerism, reducing stress and anxiety, saving time and increasing productivity, fostering financial responsibility, allowing for greater flexibility and freedom, enhancing creativity and innovation, and cultivating gratitude and appreciation, you can create a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

    FAQs

Q: Is minimalism only for people who live in small spaces?

A: No! Minimalism is about living intentionally and simplifying your life, regardless of the size of your space.

Q: How do I start letting go of items I’ve grown attached to?

A: Start by taking small steps, such as getting rid of items that are broken or no longer serve you. Then, as you become more comfortable, you can move on to items that hold emotional attachment.

Q: Won’t simplifying my life make me less prepared for emergencies?

A: Not necessarily! In fact, having a simpler life can often lead to greater preparedness, as you’re more likely to be intentional about what you own and need.

Q: How do I avoid feeling guilty or ashamed for embracing minimalism?

A: Remember that minimalism is a personal choice and doesn’t define your worth or identity. Focus on the benefits of a simplified life and the positive impact it has on your well-being and relationships.

  • Corporate Influence and Our Epidemic of Obesity

Corporate Influence and Our Epidemic of Obesity

Like the tobacco industry adding extra nicotine to cigarettes, the food industry employs taste engineers to accomplish a similar goal of maximizing the irresistibility of its products.

The plague of tobacco deaths wasn’t due just to the mass manufacturing and marketing of cheap cigarettes. Tobacco companies actively sought to make their products even more crave-able by spraying sheets of tobacco with nicotine and additives like ammonia to provide “a bigger nicotine ‘kick.’” Similarly, taste engineers are hired by the food industry to maximize product irresistibility.

Taste is the leading factor in food choice. “Sugar, fat, and salt have been called the three points of the compass” to produce “superstimulating” and “hyper palatability” to tempt people into impulsive buys and compulsive consumption. Foods are intentionally designed to hook into our evolutionary triggers and breach whatever biological barriers help “keep consumption within reasonable limits.”

Big Food is big business. The processed food industry alone brings in more than $2 trillion a year. That affords them the economic might to manipulate not only taste profiles, but public policy and scientific inquiry, too. The food, alcohol, and tobacco industries have all used similar unsavory tactics: blocking health regulations, co-opting professional organizations, creating front groups, and distorting the science. The common “corporate playbook” shouldn’t be surprising, given the common corporate threads. At one time, for example, tobacco giant Philip Morris owned both Kraft and Miller Brewing.

As you can see below and at 1:45 in my video The Role of Corporate Influence in the Obesity Epidemic, in a single year, the food industry spent more than $50 million to hire hundreds of lobbyists to influence legislation. Most of these lobbyists were “revolvers,” former federal employees in the revolving door between industry and its regulators, who could push corporate interests from the inside, only to be rewarded with cushy lobbying jobs after their “public service.” In the following year, the industry acquired a new weapon—a stick to go along with all those carrots. On January 21, 2010, the Supreme Court’s five-to-four Citizen’s United ruling permitted corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on campaign ads to trash anyone who dared stand against them. No wonder our elected officials have so thoroughly shrunk from the fight, leaving us largely with a government of Big Food, by Big Food, and for Big Food.

Globally, a similar dynamic exists. Weak tea calls from the public health community for voluntary standards are met not only with vicious fights against meaningful change but also massive transnational trade and foreign investment deals that “cement the protection of their [food industry] profits” into the laws of the lands.

The corrupting commercial influence extends to medical associations. Reminiscent of the “just what the doctor ordered” cigarette ads of yesteryear, as you can see below and at 3:05 in my video, the American Academy of Family Physicians accepted millions from The Coca-Cola Company to “develop consumer education content on beverages and sweeteners.”

On the front line, fake grassroots “Astroturf” groups are used to mask the corporate message. RJ Reynolds created Get Government Off Our Back (memorably acronymed GGOOB), “a front group created by the tobacco industry to fight regulation,” for instance. Americans Against Food Taxes may as just as well be called “Food Industry Against Food Taxes.” The power of front group formation is enough to bind bitter corporate rivals; the Sugar Association and the Corn Refiners Association linked arms with the National Confectioners Association to partner with Americans for Food and Beverage Choice.

Using another tried-and-true tobacco tactic, research front groups can be used to subvert the scientific process by shaping or suppressing the science that deviates from the corporate agenda. Take the trans fat story. Food manufacturers have not only “long denied that trans fats were associated with disease,” but actively “worked to limit research on trans fats” and “discredit potentially damaging findings.”

At what cost? The global death toll from foods high in trans fat, saturated fat, salt, and sugar is at 14 million lost lives every year. The inability of countries around the world to turn the tide on obesity “is not a failure of individual will-power. This is a failure of political will to take on big business,” said the Director-General of the World Health Organization. “It is a failure of political will to take on the powerful food and soda industries.” She ended her keynote address before the National Academy of Medicine entitled “Obesity and Diabetes: The Slow-Motion Disaster” with these words: “The interests of the public must be prioritized over those of corporations.”

Are you mad yet? To sum up my answer to the question underlying my What Triggered the Obesity Epidemic? webinar, it’s the food. I close next with my wrap-up video: The Role of the Toxic Food Environment in the Obesity Epidemic

  • Let Your Practice Guide You Beyond Crisis Mode

Let Your Practice Guide You Beyond Crisis Mode

The pandemic tested many of us on every level: mental, physical, emotional, and financial. Whether it was the endless hours on Zoom, the extended periods of isolation, not being able to do the things we loved or see the people we cared about, the past year and a half has taken a toll on all of us as we’ve moved in and out of crisis mode. As a meditation teacher, I have noticed one kind of challenge in particular: For some people, this was the most time they had actually had to spend with themselves without external distractions. Understandably daunting, for those who have kept busy enough to avoid being alone with themselves for most of their lives.

Mindfulness, yoga, meditation, and breathwork all became desired tools to get through each day of lockdowns. I continue to be inspired by the shift I have seen in so many of my clients—Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurs, soul seekers, and conscious leaders—during this period. And my own mindfulness path has taught me that challenges can always be a portal to growth if we can take a moment to pause, reflect, and develop practices to build inner strength and resilience that nothing outside of us can disrupt.

My mindfulness practice came to me when my life was crumbling and in crisis mode. Like most of society I had learned from an early age to lean on everything outside of myself to define my happiness and success. So, in a period of my life when I was stripped of work, relationships, goals, and personal timelines for accomplishing a number of things, I crumbled. It was one of those moments where there was nowhere to go, but in. This moment was a not so gentle nudge to start exploring what it meant for me personally to “journey inward” and discover tools and practices that could aid me on my journey.

Making Mindfulness a Way of Life

Since 2007 I have trained physically to climb mountains. For me, not being a naturally skilled athlete, climbing is 20% physical and 80% mental. When I summited peaks like Mt. Everest, it was mindfulness that was the game changer in my training, that got me up the mountain. My daily practice truly developed after my successful summit in 2013. Before that, I was using my mindfulness practice only as a tool to get out of a “hot mess” state or to accomplish major goals—mindfulness needed to become a way of life. Otherwise, I would simply keep arriving at the same place with nowhere to turn, but inward.

When my life is chaotic, mindfulness provides an almost instantaneous relief. For those few seconds or minutes when I practice, I can feel a sense of deep inner peace. In moments of heightened stress, anxiety, depression, sadness, or fear, it’s easy for me to practice regularly. But, when life eases its grip, my practice can fall lower on the priority list. When the urgent need for relief dissipates, I can get lulled into thinking my practice is less important.

When my life is chaotic, mindfulness provides an almost instantaneous relief.

We will continue to encounter those peaks and valleys in life, and so having a tool to help us remain centered and well at either end of the spectrum and everywhere in between remains critically important. I look at this as an aspect of prevention. We exercise our bodies, eat well, and get adequate sleep to remain healthy and keep our immunity levels high—it’s best not to wait to start these things only after a major health crisis. And I’ve realized it’s the same with keeping my heart and mind well. Both according to research and anecdotally, mindfulness can help people manage depression, stress, anxiety, compulsiveness, aid in better quality of sleep, keep better focus, and the list goes on. While a life or work crisis can be the spark of inspiration to start practicing mindfulness, a new crisis or challenging moment doesn’t need to be the reminder to keep practicing.

    Coming Home to Yourself

With mindfulness practice, I’ve come to realize I always have the choice to not get swept away with whatever is going on outside, but to reconnect with myself—to come home to myself, as some meditation teachers say. This is something available to us with every single intentional breath we take. I value my practice not only because it’s comforting or calming; it also helps me let go of the idea that joy, peace, and success are external. The more I practice and connect with inner peace, the more I take back my power, instead of depending on external things, people, or factors to provide this for me.

Beginning to emerge from the pandemic, I face a new decision: Whether I’ll continue to lean on my practice as the world begins to open, or drift away from it in the excitement of returning to former ways of living and working. The reality is that who I was pre-pandemic has changed. Having grown through this global challenge, I know I have an opportunity for reflection, before diving back into the way things were—into who I was—to decide who I will be going forward.

    Let Your Practice Guide You

When training for my climbs, my mental training was increasingly more important than the physical. 100% of how we respond to extreme environments and unpredictable circumstances depends on our mind, on our ability to cultivate inner calm and come home to ourselves, despite the intensity that surrounds us at times. As we move forward to create a new normal—a world that is more aware, compassionate, and interconnected—let’s continue to lean on our practice to consistently remind us of our inner home, not only for our own benefit, but for those around us.

I invite you to reflect on these prompts to clarify your intentions around self-care for this next chapter:

    • What did I learn about myself over these past 16 months?
    • What practices helped me most in my overall well-being?

A 12-Minute Meditation for Coming Home to Yourself

When we start to build a mindfulness practice that brings us home to ourselves, it helps us let go of the desire to seek a sense of comfort or stability outside ourselves. Explore this variation on a loving-kindness meditation to feel more grounded and at ease, no matter your external circumstances.

    1. Find a quiet space where you will not be distracted. Take a seat on the floor or on a chair. Keep your spine straight. Place your palms on your lap facing up. Close your eyes or simply lower your gaze. Ease into your seat.
    1. Start connecting with your breath. If your mind is busy, you can count your breaths as above to refocus and slow down.
    1. Connect with the rhythm of your breath. With each inhale ground yourself a little more into your seat. With each exhale let go of any tension, worries, doubts, or fears that arise.
    1. As you inhale next, feel the beauty of the breath moving through your body. Connect with a sense of renewal and ease.
    2. As you exhale, release any remaining tension a little bit more, embracing a feeling of lightness come over you.
    1. As you inhale, softly mentally affirm, “I am safe, I am home.” As you exhale, softly mentally affirm, “I am well, and at ease.”
    1. Continue with these affirmations and cycles of breath until you feel a shift within you. Feel your sense of safety, joy, ease, and peace and with each breath come home more to yourself.

I revisit this practice weekly to ground me and feel safe, regardless of what might be happening around me or whether I’m in crisis mode. It’s a beautiful way to start your day. I also have practiced these affirmations while climbing intense sections on peaks or in the midst of stressful or fearful situations, reminding myself I can always come back to the safety of my home within.

  • Know About Rare Illness, Life-Threatening Complications

Know About Rare Illness, Life-Threatening Complications

Brazil has reported the first-ever deaths from Oropouche Virus, a relatively unknown illness with no specific vaccines or medications for prevention and treatment.

Two women in Bahia, a northeastern Brazilian state, have died of forest Oropuche virus, which has already infected 7,236 people this year in Brazil, the country’s health ministry reported last week. The Oropouche virus primarily spreads to people through the bite of infected midges, though some mosquitoes can also transmit the virus.

According to reports, both the victims were under 30 years old, with no history of comorbidities, but had developed symptoms similar to dengue, another mosquito-borne illness.

The Oropouche virus was first identified in a Caribbean forest worker in 1955. Since then, many countries in the Amazon region, including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, and Peru, have reported cases of infection. Currently, there is no evidence of disease transmission in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    Know Signs and Complications:

The symptoms typically start abruptly with severe fever, headache, fatigue, and muscular and joint pain within a week after being bitten by the infected midges or mosquito. These symptoms can last a week and may return after a few days or weeks.

The patients with mild illness recover within days or weeks. However, more serious cases (up to 4% of cases) develop neurologic symptoms. Patients may develop neuroinvasive diseases such as meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord), encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), or experience bleeding. Since the symptoms of the Oropouche disease are similar to those of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, or malaria, it can be often misdiagnosed.

    Treatment:

For those with mild Oropouche infection, supportive care that typically includes rest, plenty of fluids, and the use of analgesics and antipyretics is recommended. In case of severe symptoms, patients require hospitalization for close observation and more intensive supportive treatment.

    Prevention tips:

Since there are no effective vaccinations and drugs for Oropouche, the best way to protect from the infection is to prevent bites from midges and mosquitoes. Like all vector-borne viral infections, effective strategies for vector control can also reduce disease transmission.
