    Why Foodborne Illness Outbreaks Are Surging Across the US This Summer

    Food safety has become an unusually difficult question for American consumers this summer. Recalls and foodborne illness investigations have been occurring with increasing frequency, while health officials are dealing with several large outbreaks simultaneously.

    The scale is striking. The US Food and Drug Administration has posted 20 foodborne illness investigations so far this year and says work remains active on 18 foodborne illness clusters. The agency also published a dozen foodborne illness investigations over the past two months.

    About 10,500 illnesses have been associated with foodborne outbreaks so far in 2026, according to FDA and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data cited in the report. That is substantially higher than the average of roughly 1,500 outbreak-associated illnesses recorded annually from 2021 through 2025.

    The numbers are being driven overwhelmingly by a massive cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce, but other pathogens are contributing to the unusually heavy workload facing public health investigators.

    The largest outbreak by far involves Cyclospora, a parasite that can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. According to the FDA’s investigation into the multistate cyclospora outbreak, thousands of illnesses have been linked to iceberg lettuce distributed to restaurants and other food businesses.

    At least 9,481 illnesses had been linked to the outbreak across 17 states as of the report’s publication. That figure alone exceeds the combined number of illnesses from all foodborne outbreaks over the previous four years, making the outbreak an exceptional event in the US food safety system.

    The outbreak has also highlighted how difficult it can be to identify the source of contaminated food. Fresh produce moves through complicated supply chains involving farms, processors, distributors, restaurants, and retailers. By the time a person becomes sick, the food they consumed may have traveled hundreds or thousands of miles.

    Other Foodborne Pathogens Are Adding to the Pressure

    The active investigations include several pathogens that have repeatedly caused outbreaks in the United States, including E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella. These bacteria can contaminate foods ranging from fresh produce and eggs to meat and processed products.

    The FDA has also investigated multiple salmonella outbreaks associated with foods including jalapeƱo peppers, moringa leaf powder, eggs, and cantaloupe. These outbreaks illustrate why simply counting recalls can provide an incomplete picture of food safety.

    One recall may involve multiple products sold across numerous states, while another outbreak may affect fewer people but cause severe illness or death. Food safety experts therefore argue that the most useful measurements include the number of people affected, the severity of illness, the geographic reach of an outbreak, and how quickly authorities can identify and remove the source.

    Dr. Manisha Juthani, president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, similarly warned that delays at different stages of an investigation can increase the amount of time people remain exposed to a contaminated product.

    That delay is particularly significant in foodborne illness because contaminated products can continue moving through the supply chain while investigators are still trying to determine where they came from.

    The problem is not limited to identifying the original source. Once investigators have a suspected food, officials must determine where it was distributed, which businesses received it and whether consumers still have it in their homes.

    Even when investigators identify a cluster of illnesses, finding the contaminated food can be extremely difficult.

    According to the report, FDA investigations over the previous five years failed to identify a food source in about 40% of outbreaks. That means a substantial proportion of investigations end without providing consumers with a definitive answer about the cause of the illnesses.

    There are several reasons for this. Food may have been consumed days or weeks before symptoms appeared; products may no longer be available for testing; and patients may have eaten many of the same foods commonly consumed by people who did not become sick.

    The modern food supply chain adds another layer of complexity. A single ingredient can pass through farms, processors, distributors, restaurants, and retailers before reaching a consumer. If contamination occurs at any point, tracing every potentially affected product can become a massive logistical task.

    The unusually high number of outbreaks does not mean consumers should avoid fresh produce, restaurants, or grocery stores. Most food is safe, and foodborne illness remains a preventable risk when appropriate food-handling practices are followed.

    Consumers should pay attention to official recall announcements and check the FDA’s current outbreak investigations when a specific food is named in the news. If a recalled product is in the home, it should not be eaten, and consumers should follow the instructions provided by health authorities.

    Basic food-safety practices remain important. Wash hands before preparing food, keep raw meat and eggs separate from ready-to-eat foods, cook foods to appropriate temperatures, and refrigerate perishable foods promptly. Fresh produce should also be handled carefully, particularly when preparing it for people at higher risk of serious illness.

    Consumers should also avoid assuming that every recall represents the same level of danger. A recall may be issued as a precaution before illnesses are confirmed, while another may follow a large outbreak involving hundreds or thousands of people.

    The current summer surge is significant because several investigations are occurring simultaneously, and one exceptionally large cyclospora outbreak has dramatically increased the number of illnesses. It also demonstrates why rapid surveillance, laboratory testing, and well-funded public health departments remain important parts of food safety.
