  • Outdoor Play to Combat Rising Childhood Anxiety—Here’s How Schools Are Responding

Outdoor Play to Combat Rising Childhood Anxiety—Here’s How Schools Are Responding

Gen Z has struggled with rising anxiety. Gen Alpha shouldn’t follow suit. That’s why society is looking for proactive ways to pave the way toward healthier mental well-being for the newest generational group, such as giving children more access to fresh air and outdoor play with the help and commitment of forward-leaning schools.

How high has Gen Z’s stress level become? Research from 2024 indicates that 30% of modern teenagers will experience anxiety, a figure that’s expected to grow if deliberate changes aren’t made. The reasons behind this alarming trend range from geopolitical instability to evolving familial structures. Although not all of those sources can be easily addressed, one message is clear: Our schools can use the information learned about Gen Z to put measures in place that are designed to help Gen Alpha thrive.

And giving kids more reasons to get outside is a great starting place.

According to the Kids Mental Health Foundation, when children go outdoors, they typically engage in a variety of physical, social, and emotional activities. And it’s well-documented that exercising the body can profoundly improve mood. Plus, when kids can focus on having unstructured fun in playground environments, they naturally build connections and memories with their peers.

Commercial playground equipment supplier Playground Equipment discusses this concept of “play therapy” and its benefits, noting that when kids are encouraged to play, they gain a stronger sense of resilience. Indeed, expert reporting from the company indicates that the escapism of playing within nature fuels healthier levels of emotional control in kids.

Of course, some parents may find it difficult to determine how best to get their children outside in safe and welcoming environments. To make their job easier, schools are responding by taking steps toward making outdoor play more appealing and effortless.

    1. They’re updating their playgrounds to be more inclusive.

Many parents remember the playgrounds they enjoyed as children as being somewhat limited. They had minimal and basic equipment that was adequate but not always accessible. Therefore, some children had to sit on the sidelines (such as those using assistive devices) rather than join in the play.

In response, many schools are making updates, such as installing equipment that meets ADA requirements. Additionally, they’re adding equipment pieces meant for use by both children and adults. Or, they’re adding benches and shaded areas to make being at the playground more comfortable for parents and grandparents.

It’s not hard to see how the inclusivity of a playground can affect young visitors’ anxiety levels. Instead of feeling unwelcome, children of all backgrounds and with most conditions can engage with at least some parts of the play space. This gives them the same chance to gain the mental well-being advantages of being outdoors as their peers who are not disabled. In fact, one study on inclusive play observed that 71% of children actively engaged in functional play when given the chance to exercise at an inclusive playground.

    2. They’re expanding their playground footprints.

Some schools may have limited playground space. However, other schools are looking for creative ways to expand their play areas to give children more places and ways to exercise their bodies and brains.

Notably, many schools are partnering with community entities to make this type of expansion feasible, even if their budgets are limited. Case in point, Mind on Math donated funds toward a playground expansion at a local elementary school. The corporate donation was part of the organization’s commitment to fuel brighter tomorrows for young people in the education company’s service area.

Expanding the footprint of a playground achieves several key goals when it comes to helping children release their anxieties through activity. First, it broadens the number of individuals who can partake in the playground simultaneously. More visitors mean more chances for unplanned “play dates” and similar social interactions. Secondly, it adds new equipment and areas to the playground, which may encourage families to visit more frequently or stay longer. Finally, it gives the school interesting items to talk about in their online and offline outreach communications.

    3. They’re serving as the local neighborhood community playground.

It would be wonderful if playgrounds were close to every home. They’re not.

In fact, many children and their parents find it difficult to get to playgrounds because they’re not around the corner. The Trust for Public Land talks about this phenomenon in depth, explaining that it bridges a gap in service areas. According to the organization, millions of people don’t have a park that’s within a 10-minute walk of where they live. But they might have a school that’s closer, and the school’s playground can become an outdoor beacon.

To solve this issue, some schools are creating agreements with their local governments to allow them to serve as community playgrounds. By making their play spaces available to people within the community during non-school hours, elementary and middle schools can make a difference in the lives of countless kids. And many of those kids may be part of their existing student population, allowing them to serve the children they already educate.

Kids will always have to deal with anxiety. After all, stressors are a natural experience. However, too much anxiety can be a burden and a barrier to achievement for Gen Alpha, as it’s been for many Gen Z members. That’s why it’s essential for schools to respond with innovative, enlightened measures.

Colorado Man Dies During Routine Surgery After Distracted Doctors Silence Alarms to Play Music Bingo: Lawsuit

A Colorado man died during routine cataract surgery after his medical team allegedly silenced critical alarms while playing music bingo, according to a lawsuit filed by his widow.

In February 2023, 56-year-old Bart Reiter underwent cataract surgery at InSight Surgery Center in Lone Tree, Colorado. His wife, Chris, was told she could run an errand and would be contacted when the procedure was finished, Local 12 reported. However, when Dr. Carl Stark Johnson, Reiter’s surgeon, met her in a parking lot near the hospital, he asked Chris if she believed in God and invited her to pray with him before telling her that her husband of 23 years had died.

“It just didn’t make sense. Bart was 56. I mean, we skied every weekend. We bike together, we hike together,” Writer said, according to Atlanta News First.

Staff noticed Reiter’s vital signs were abnormal 11 minutes into the procedure. He was rushed to a nearby medical center, where he later died.

Although she initially believed her husband’s death was a tragic accident, Chris filed a lawsuit after another physician contacted her to raise concerns about her husband’s medical team. That doctor disclosed Dr. Johnson and anesthesiologist Dr. Michael Urban often played a game called “music bingo” during operations, a practice he described as a “major distraction.” The game involved Dr. Urban playing songs from his phone while the team guessed the tunes.

According to depositions obtained by 9News, both doctors were playing the game during Reiter’s procedure. Further testimony revealed Dr. Urban had turned off a monitoring machine that would have alerted staff to Reiter’s deteriorating condition without informing Dr. Johnson.

“Dr. Johnson relies on the anesthesiologist to provide the proper dose and type of anesthesia, to properly monitor the patient’s condition, and to communicate all relevant information to the surgeon including if they have elected, for whatever reason, to silence the audible alarms,” the surgeon’s attorney stated, according to 9News.

Dr. Johnson stood by his practices and blamed the anesthesiologist for not “paying attention to the vital signs and doing his job.” Nonetheless, he and his legal team ultimately settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount.

  • Do Taxpayer Subsidies Play a Role in the Obesity Epidemic?

Do Taxpayer Subsidies Play a Role in the Obesity Epidemic?

Why are U.S. taxpayers giving billions of dollars to support the likes of the sugar and meat industries?

The rise in calorie surplus sufficient to explain the obesity epidemic was less a change in food quantity than in food quality. Access to cheap, high-calorie, low-quality convenience foods exploded, and the federal government very much played a role in making this happen. U.S. taxpayers give billions of dollars in subsidies to prop up the likes of the sugar industry, the corn industry and its high-fructose syrup, and the production of soybeans, about half of which is processed into vegetable oil and the other half is used as cheap feed to help make dollar-menu meat. You can see a table of subsidy recipients below and at 0:49 in my video The Role of Taxpayer Subsidies in the Obesity Epidemic. Why do taxpayers give nearly a quarter of a billion dollars a year to the sorghum industry? When was the last time you sat down to some sorghum? It’s almost all fed to cattle and other livestock. “We have created a food price structure that favors relatively animal source foods, sweets, and fats”—animal products, sugars, and oils.

The Farm Bill started out as an emergency measure during the Great Depression of the 1930s to protect small farmers but was weaponized by Big Ag into a cash cow with pork barrel politics—including said producers of beef and pork. From 1970 to 1994, global beef prices dropped by more than 60 percent. And, if it weren’t for taxpayers “sweetening the pot” with billions of dollars a year, high-fructose corn syrup would cost the soda industry about 12 percent more. Then we hand Big Soda billions more through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamps Program, to give sugary drinks to low-income individuals. Why is chicken so cheap? After one Farm Bill, corn and soy were subsidized below the cost of production for cheap animal fodder. We effectively handed the poultry and pork industries about $10 billion each. That’s not chicken feed—or rather, it is!

This is changing what we eat.

As you can see below and at 2:03 in my video, thanks in part to subsidies, dairy, meats, sweets, eggs, oils, and soda were all getting relatively cheaper compared to the overall consumer food price index as the obesity epidemic took off, whereas the relative cost of fresh fruits and vegetables doubled. This may help explain why, during about the same period, the percentage of Americans getting five servings of fruits and vegetables a day dropped from 42 percent to 26 percent. Why not just subsidize produce instead? Because that’s not where the money is.

“To understand what is shaping our foodscape today, it is important to understand the significance of differential profit.” Whole foods or minimally processed foods, such as canned beans or tomato paste, are what the food business refers to as “commodities.” They have such slim profit margins that “some are typically sold at or below cost, as ‘loss leaders,’ to attract customers to the store” in the hopes that they’ll also buy the “value-added” products. Some of the most profitable products for producers and vendors alike are the ultra-processed, fatty, sugary, and salty concoctions of artificially flavored, artificially colored, and artificially cheap ingredients—thanks to taxpayer subsidies.

Different foods reap different returns. Measured in “profit per square foot of selling space” in the supermarket, confectionaries like candy bars consistently rank among the most lucrative. The markups are the only healthy thing about them. Fried snacks like potato chips and corn chips are also highly profitable. PepsiCo’s subsidiary Frito-Lay brags that while its products represented only about 1 percent of total supermarket sales, they may account for more than 10 percent of operating profits for supermarkets and 40 percent of profit growth.

It’s no surprise, then, that the entire system is geared towards garbage. The rise in the calorie supply wasn’t just more food but a different kind of food. There’s a dumb dichotomy about the drivers of the obesity epidemic: Is it the sugar or the fat? They’re both highly subsidized, and they both took off. As you can see below and at 4:29 and 4:35 in my video, along with a significant rise in refined grain products that is difficult to quantify, the rise in obesity was accompanied by about a 20 percent increase in per capita pounds of added sugars and a 38 percent increase in added fats.

More than half of all calories consumed by most adults in the United States were found to originate from these subsidized foods, and they appear to be worse off for it. Those eating the most had significantly higher levels of chronic disease risk factors, including elevated cholesterol, inflammation, and body weight.

If it really were a government of, by, and for the people, we’d be subsidizing healthy foods, if anything, to make fruits and vegetables cheap or even free. Instead, our tax dollars are shoveled to the likes of the sugar industry or to livestock feed to make cheap, fast-food meat.

Speaking of sorghum, I had never had it before and it’s delicious! In fact, I wish I had discovered it before How Not to Diet was published. I now add sorghum and finger millet to my BROL bowl which used to just include purple barley groats, rye groats, oat groats, and black lentils, so the acronym has become an unpronounceable BROLMS. Anyway, sorghum is a great rice substitute for those who saw my rice and arsenic video series and were as convinced as I am that we need to diversify our grains.

We now turn to marketing. After all of the taxpayer-subsidized glut of calories in the market, the food industry had to find a way to get it into people’s mouths. So, next: The Role of Marketing in the Obesity Epidemic

We’re about halfway through this series on the obesity epidemic. If you missed any so far, check out the related videos below.

  • Andor Health Shifts Healthcare From Point-Based Solutions To Platform Play For Strategic Care Delivery

Andor Health Shifts Healthcare From Point-Based Solutions To Platform Play For Strategic Care Delivery

The demand for adaptable and comprehensive healthcare solutions has never been greater. While traditional point-based solutions — those that address specific, isolated aspects of patient care — have their place in tackling particular challenges, they often fail to meet the broader needs of modern healthcare systems. Designed to solve individual problems, these solutions can unintentionally create silos within healthcare operations, leading to fragmented care, inefficiencies, and higher costs. As healthcare delivery becomes more complex, providers are increasingly seeking a more integrated and strategic approach, one that not only meets immediate needs but also aligns with long-term goals.

This shift is exemplified by Andor Health’s collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC Health), implementing a decentralized care delivery model powered by Andor’s ThinkAndor® platform.

Enter Platform Play: A Strategic Paradigm Shift

Andor Health’s AI-first ThinkAndor® represents a departure from the fragmented nature of point-based solutions, offering instead a platform approach that unifies the various elements of virtual health into a cohesive ecosystem. ThinkAndor® Virtual Command Center brings the five pillars of virtual health into a single, comprehensive platform: Virtual Visits, Virtual Hospital, Virtual Patient Monitoring, Virtual Team Collaboration, and Virtual Community Collaboration.

By integrating these pillars, Andor Health empowers healthcare systems to transition from a one-size-fits-most model to a decentralized care delivery approach. This platform play not only enhances the scalability and flexibility of care but also ensures that each component of the healthcare ecosystem is interconnected and working towards the same strategic objectives.

Going Beyond the Smart Room: Empowering Nursing & Clinical Staff with Ambient AI Technology

Compounding on its impact on strategic care delivery, ThinkAndor® is also revolutionizing how frontline healthcare workers, particularly nurses and clinical staff, manage their daily tasks. The burden of administrative responsibilities is a well-documented challenge in a traditional point-based healthcare system, often leading to clinician burnout and detracting from patient care. However, the use of ambient AI technology can alleviate these pressures.

ThinkAndor®’s ambient AI capabilities streamline workflows by automating documentation and observation tasks, allowing nurses to focus more on patient care rather than administrative duties. By integrating these advanced technologies at scale, healthcare systems can optimize interventions and improve overall efficiency.

MUSC Health: A Case Study in Platform Implementation

MUSC Health’s collaboration with Andor Health is a prime example of how a platform approach can revolutionize care delivery. As one of only two national Telehealth Centers of Excellence, MUSC Health recognized the limitations of point-based solutions in meeting the diverse needs of South Carolina’s population. By adopting ThinkAndor®, MUSC Health is poised to create a next-generation virtual care ecosystem that extends beyond traditional healthcare settings and into schools and communities across the state.

Patrick Cawley, CEO of MUSC Health, emphasized the importance of this shift, “By using telehealth wherever and whenever possible, MUSC Health can continue to expand care access in underserved areas of the state while increasing the physical presence of new specialties customized for communities’ needs.”

This strategic pivot towards a decentralized care model is not just about expanding access, it’s about delivering the right care at the right time and place, utilizing the full capabilities of AI-driven technology to support innovative care strategies like virtual nursing, virtual sitting, and remote consultations.

The Future of Healthcare is Integrated

As healthcare systems continue to face unprecedented challenges, the move away from point-based solutions to a platform-centric strategy like ThinkAndor® is a necessary evolution. Andor Health’s commitment to transforming care delivery through platform play with AI-first ThinkAndor® underscores the importance of strategic planning in healthcare innovation. By removing the limitations of point-based solutions, Andor Health enables healthcare providers to think bigger, plan smarter, and deliver better outcomes.

The partnership between Andor Health and MUSC Health serves as a blueprint for other health systems looking to make this critical shift. As more organizations embrace the platform approach, the future of healthcare will undoubtedly be more connected, efficient, and patient-centric.

  • How to Safely Play and Win

How to Safely Play and Win

Slots games are arguably one of the more popular casino games in existence. They have captured the imaginations of millions of people worldwide who enjoy the thrill of taking a chance that their next spin will be the one that floods their pockets with all the cash they could ever imagine. While slots, like most casino games, tend to be heavily weighted towards lady luck more than anything else, there are a few tips and tricks you can follow that should help to slightly improve your odds. If this sounds right up your street, then you have landed on the right post, as we will explore a few of them that should make it a little bit more likely that you will walk away with some cash in your pocket rather than losing the shirt off your back!

    Research Reputable Online Casinos Carefully

Before you pull your first level or head online to the first available online casino that pops up in the search results, you really should understand what to look for to ensure that you are playing in a casino that plays by the rules rather than flouting them for its own gain. Your first step is simply observing the site in question and checking for anything that makes it look unappealing or out to take your money as fast as possible. If you see anything untoward, like grammatical errors or poor design quality, or if it isn’t using encrypted protocols, you may have landed upon a site that is on the riskier side of things, and it may be prudent to move elsewhere.

Another thing to check is the game selection and how seriously they take slots. Many of the better casinos will have invested significant amounts of money to make sure they have a broad range of slots to appeal to as many customers as possible and keep things fresh. If you check out betflixpro888, you will see that they have a vast range of options for you to engage with, making this sort of site one that will remain fun for longer. Finally, you should explore how they accept payments and what their withdrawal procedures are. If they use sketchy-looking payment processors or have completely crazy withdrawal limits (all casinos will have some kind of limitation, but it should be feasible and not over the top), then moving on to another choice could save you a lot of aggravation.

    Understand Game Rules Before Playing

You wouldn’t jump behind the wheel of a car before learning how to drive, and you would not invest in a company without first figuring out its fundamentals. The same is true when it comes to slots, and although they may appear simple at first glance, they can be fiendishly tricky to fully grasp. This is where it makes sense to understand the rules before committing to spending your hard-ensured cash, as this will help you to become au fait with the rules for the particular type of slots you want to play and thus reduce your chances of losing. You can achieve this by practicing with a dummy account before using the real things. These accounts allow you to practice by spending fake money in order to really become familiar with and gain a deeper insight into what works and what doesn’t. As we said, luck plays an outsized part in the process, but you are far more likely to lose if you don’t know how to play than if you do.

    Choose High RTP Slot Games

Understanding and applying RTP to online slot games may significantly improve your overall experience and possible earnings. RTP stands for “Return to Player,” and it refers to the proportion of all gambled money that a slot machine will pay out to players over time. Essentially, it’s a measure of how much you can expect to get back from a particular game. Slot games with a higher RTP percentage will generally offer better returns to players over the long run, making them a safer and smarter choice for those who are looking to maximize their chances of winning. Choosing high RTP slots means you are selecting games that are designed to give back a higher portion of bets to the players. This doesn’t guarantee you’ll win every time, but it does mean that the odds are slightly tipped more in your favor compared to lower RTP games. For instance, a game with a 94% RTP will return $94 for every $100 wagered on average, which can stretch your bankroll further and provide more opportunities to enjoy and potentially win.

Play Progressive Slots For Bigger Payouts

If you’re looking to increase your potential winnings while playing slots significantly, progressive slots are an excellent choice. Progressive slots are unique because they have jackpots that grow incrementally every time the game is played but not won. This means a portion of each bet contributes to a continually increasing jackpot, which can result in massive payouts for the lucky winner. The distinct advantage of progressive slots over other types is the potential for huge jackpots that far exceed those of standard slot machines. Whereas traditional slots have fixed payouts, progressive slots lure players with the possibility of winning life-changing sums of money. While the chances of hitting the jackpot on a progressive slot are relatively lower, the excitement and potential rewards can make them worth the gamble for many players.

Set A Budget And Stick To It

To safely play and enhance your slot gaming experience, make sure to set a budget and stick to it. Only wager amounts you are comfortable with losing, as the allure of progressive jackpots can sometimes lead to overspending. Remember that while slots can offer substantial rewards, it’s crucial to maintain a responsible approach to your gaming activities to ensure a fun and sustainable experience.
