Is Remote Work Greener? We Calculated Buffer’s Carbon Footprint to Find Out

I wish I could tell you that I have always been an environmental warrior.

But my story is a more common one. I’ve always done my best to care for the environment. I cycle, accompany or take public transport as much as I can. I use my refillable water bottle and tote bags to avoid waste.

That’s not too bad, right? So I reflected, until I speak the 2018 special report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change( IPCC ). It is evident that we need bolder, more urgent actions.

As I were starting to build more changes in my personal life to reduce my carbon footprint, I became curious to figure out the environmental impact of my work as well. I have worked at Buffer- a fully remote company– for four years. I have always assumed that a remote corporation must have a lower carbon footprint, but is that right?

Calculating our impact in 4 key areas

As a side mention, the “buildings and constructs construction” spheres combined are responsible for 36% of world-wide final energy consumption and nearly 40% of total direct and indirect CO2 radiations. As more beings work in home offices, that should decrease the demand for office houses to accommodate for the increase of population across the world.

Data center energy

There are other aspects of running an office that are tougher to calculate, such as the power consumed by what individual organizations grows and how. Since Buffer is a software-as-a-service companionship, our major intensity expenditure is storing the large amount of data needed to power our tools.

All the data centers in the US are estimated to consume more than 90 billion kilowatt-hours of energy annually- approximately 3 percent of America’s total electrical energy use( and ripening ).

Companies can either house all their functions on their own server that they purchase and have on-site, or move their data to a cloud work. A vapour service is a way to rent server space, rather than own the server, and access it via the internet.

Since they’re not physically located, remote business are most likely to use the cloud, which is generally more force efficient and has a smaller carbon footprint than on-premise servers.

With the shadow, corporations generally use less than 1/4 of the servers than they would on-premises- a major energy reduction!

But not all clouds are created equal- some are greener than others.

Buffer consumes AWS, which has specified a target for 80% sustainable servers by 2024 and 100% by 2030.( By comparing, Google has already achieved this goal .) It’s difficult to estimate exact counts for this section, but according to this organization, cloud server abusing non-green electricity would be 0.5 tons of CO2e/ time and server, and an on-premise or data center-server apply non-green electricity would be 1 ton of CO2e/ time and server.

Work travel

As a remote companionship, Buffer has one company-wide retreat plus an additional “onsite” for each area per year. These are invaluable minutes for remote crews to meet in person and construct the link that no sum of video calls or Slack weaves could replace.

The welfares flexibility gives can’t be measured

While these figures are undoubtedly handy, they don’t tell the full fib. There are many crucial aspect of remote labouring that are difficult to measure, but impactful nonetheless.

Since I assembled Buffer four years ago, the flexibility of remote wreak has free-spoken me to make a lot of positive changes in my life, including ones that align with my importances to care for the environment.

I have been able to choose an energy supplier that proposals 100% renewable energy for my home office, and I can also pick my coworking space based on their commitment to minimize their carbon footprint.

Overall, remote study seems to provide more flexibility and opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint further. That feels unbelievably energizing to me.
