Charging decision in Monroe crash that killed 2 kids to come Tuesday

Berlin Township — Grief and pain continued to ripple Monday through a Monroe County community, two days after two children were killed by an alleged drunken driver who plowed her car into a birthday party.

A makeshift memorial of stuffed animals and crucifixes emerged on Monday outside the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township where the party was held as prosecutors said a charging decision against the suspected driver, a 66-year-old woman, would likely come Tuesday.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on Monday afternoon identified the two children killed as siblings Alanah Phillips, 8, and Zayn Phillips, 4. They died at the scene, the sheriff’s department said.

Monroe County Prosecutor Jeffery Yorkey said the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department has additional investigating to do before his office can make a charging decision related to the crash.

“Mr. Yorkey wishes to send out his deepest condolences to the victims of Saturday’s tragic incident,” according to a press release from prosecutors.

Nine other people were taken to hospitals including a 31-year-old woman in critical condition; an 11-year-old boy in critical condition; an 18-year-old woman in serious condition; a 16-year-old girl in serious condition; and a 14-year-old boy in serious condition, according to an update from the sheriff’s office Monday afternoon.
